LG TV Upgrade

Post by vission »

My LG OLED Tv was just upgraded to webOS 24, it looks to me that the HDHomeRun app is no longer available nor can it be installed. Will SD be upgrading their app to support webOS 24+?

We have an updated version that will be (or might already be) submitted to LG for them to review. There was some confusion or complication of some sort that was causing LG to not approve updates or the app for newer TVs, but we might have a resolution for that in this new version.

Any update to the HD HomeRun app not working on WebOS 24 situation? I would like to move to WebOS 24 but need to know I will not loose my DVR playback as a result. Thanks!

No HDHomeRun Support on WebOS 24

Post by Velobliss »

I went ahead and purchased a new LG OLED55C4 this weekend after noticing the HDHomeRun app description in the LG Content Store now shows support for 2024 TV models running WebOS 24. It turns out this is not the case. HDHomeRun app does not show up in the LG Content Store when searching from the new OLED55C4. Why is it that the HDHomeRun app is not available for an OLED55C4 running WebOS 24, but is available for a 55QNED85UQA running WebOS 24?

Enabling the app for any new models requires approval from LG and such approval has not been forthcoming.

Thanks for the reply Jason. I am surprised that LG would not want to prioritize the approval process for this sort of thing. LG loves user data and when I stay within their ecosystem on the 55QNED85UQA, they can collect information on everything I watch - HDHomeRun DVR, Netflix, Youtube, Prime Video etc. In return I get a very simple AV environment with no additional boxes, cables etc. Now with the OLED55C4 I am forced to add an AppleTV to access HDHomeRun DVR. Because the AppleTV is present, I am also going to use it to access Netflix, Youtube, Prime Video etc. I will not use the LG apps at all, the OLED55C4 will essentially become a very nice dumb TV with an HDMI port. I'll probably sever its network connection as well. No more user data for LG. I am having a hard time seeing what the advantage is for LG not being forthcoming with the approvals. By granting them, at a minimum they will sell more TV's, and also potentially capture a whole lot more user data which seems to be what they are really after these days.

If you want updates, talk to your LG representatives, for they control the vertical, and they control the horizontal.

If you can inform them that a substantial number (tens of thousands) of future purchases from your company ride on their commitments to updates, they might listen. If your purchase volume is in singletons, they simply won't care about you.

Can't believe there is no Hdhomerun app for the new LG TVs! I've just bought a shiny new 77 inch G4 and cant use it with my Hdhomerun! Very frustrating! It hasn't even occurred to me that it would no longer work with LG
