Hello,
If I have 2 HDHomeRun Duo's at a clients site. They were interesting in adding the DVR service and I was wondering how it handles if only one Duo has an external drive connected?
- Is only that Duo capable of recording? or can either record to the HDD across the network conneciton?
- If only one can record, if both tuners are being used on the Duo with the HDD, will it bump a connection to the other Duo so that the recording can still happen?
Depending on the above answers; If I need to install a HDD on both units to be able to handle 3 tuners being used and needing to ensure a recording. Is that experience seamless in the different HDHomeRun apps (this site uses mostly Fire TVs or iOS devices) where all the recordings are available without having to go between the HHDs? (I read some of the information, but was unclear since I cannot test before they purchase the subsription)
Thanks!
Erik
Multiple HDHomeRun Devices with DVR Question
Re: Multiple HDHomeRun Devices with DVR Question
I don't know the answer to your exact question, but if you're wanting to have both devices record/save shows to the same hardware, you can do that as documented here:
https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/dvr:storage
Scroll down to where it says Do-it-yourself/ Bring-your-own-hardware DVR storage.
I'm doing this with two Flex 4K devices talking to a Linux server.
Yes, if you're using storage as mentioned above. Is that experience seamless in the different HDHomeRun apps (this site uses mostly Fire TVs or iOS devices) where all the recordings are available without having to go between the HHDs? Re: Multiple HDHomeRun Devices with DVR Question
Thanks,
The site doesn't have any systems/NAS/24-7 system running (older couple who love the OTA system I put in, just want to enhance it with DVR for some much loved shows) so that is why I am inquiring if a HDD attached to one Duo acts like a NAS for the other or if each needs its own HDD and then they "Pool" or not.

Re: Multiple HDHomeRun Devices with DVR Question
Any of SD's dvr hardware (servio, scribe, flex with drive attached) work just like any other engine and detect all tuners on same subnet. I believe they may limit such to 6 (or 8) streams but may be a bit more). On simple networks their should be no issue untill you get to 2 quads (quatros) or more... some that may have more complicated networks thar may segregate with vlans or have in local network firewall devices may occasionally have some issues as I have seen it discover and use ipv4, ipv6, link local(ipv4 and ipv6), site local(ipv6) addresses and sometimes get such use blocked after discovery.
If a drive is also added to the other tuner they do communicate with eachother and typically the one with the most space will record.

Thanks for that. If each device has an HDD and it chooses the opposite device's HDD...which device actually tunes the channel? Is it only the one with the HDD attached? or can the other one as well sent it to that device?
