You can check the log on your HDHomeRun here: http://hdhomerun.local/log.html

Ok, I did find that log a bit ago and do see some dns failures in it so I'll work on that. But we may be getting off in the weeds? My original beef was not having a method to navigate channels.

In addition to guide data, the app's UI is downloaded from our servers as well, so this is all probably the same issue.

The app shouldn't be working at all - you should be seeing an error message with the option to retry or exit.

There was a major upgrade to this handling recently. I will set up a manual QA test for this situation tomorrow.

No, there are no errors on either tv or on windows, but I did find the dns issue and am working to fix it ASAP. I'll try to update tomorrow. Thanks again to everyone for helping me.

Update gents, I had a UPS must have overheated and shutdown causing one hypervisor to go offline, hence the broken DNS. All good now with that and DNS, and guess what; the hd apps all work including the guides on tvs and windows. I guess there were no ui errors thrown because the first one of 60 some channels always worked on all three devices. Thanks again for directing me.

It's too bad this can't work now without internet. I had hoped this could be a backup for when internet is down. Could have been a selling point.

The app and dvr requires internet (for dvr it checks anout every hour for what to record in the next 4 hours or so)

There are many other apps/software that don't require internet to use the tuner.

There are thousands... simplest for a pc is probably vlc for those times internet is temporarily down. For a tv the simplest is usually it's own built in dlna player.

Want something more robust... plex, ****, emby, nextpvr, channels, myth...

Some may need internet to get started, but typically nearly all others work without internet and have guide diwnloaded for 2 weeks and many actually can get guide through the tv signals (though in US that can be a bad experience)

So this can work without using hdhomerun? Connect direct to the siliconedust tuner?

Yes.

There's info about it here:
https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/http_api

I do something like the following, under macOS, from the terminal:

Code: Select all

open -a vlc http://192.168.X.X:5004/auto/v9.1
Or something like the following if I'm trying to tune a specific frequency/program:

Code: Select all

open -a vlc http://192.168.X.X:5004/auto/5004/auto/ch581000000-5
Substitute your device's IP address for 192.168.X.X.

Also in VLC and newer HDHomeruns:

View -> Playlist -> Universal Plug'n'Play

Double-click your HDHomerun device , then Channels, then choose a channel.

---

Roku platforms can use the Roku Media Player app to watch offline. Might need to install it while connected first and no program guide, of course.

SD has said the Roku HDHomerun app can work work without an internet connection. I haven't tested that.
