Use HDHomeRun when there's no Internet??

Post by tjp »

As you may be aware the HDHomeRun OTA tuner is not accessible (locally) if it doesn't have internet (WAN) access (when your LAN is still running normally). If your Internet is down, that is when you would really like to use the HDHomeRun. A year or so ago SD said in a post that this was something they were looking at correcting in the future. I wonder if someone could have any information on this feature update.

The tuner is available, the API that some applications use may not be. With ATSC 3.0 there are more restrictions though, another reason DRM should not be considered in the public interest.

There is nothing stopping the tuner from working without an internet connection. The problem is that the HDHomeRun app does not work without an internet connection.

The solution is to use different software which does not have this limitation.

Thanks!
It didn't occur to (thick headed) me to try another application.
I also have Plex and the Live TV function worked fine when I tested it with the WAN port disabled.

I too have this concern and would like to know if there is a plan to address it.
An ideal solution for me would be for the HD homerun app to popup without the DVR functions enabled, like it does when you don't have the DVR software, along with a warning about internet access.

I have two workarounds for this that I use when our power is out for storms, etc. & I need to see the news and weather.
Recently, this was a big deal as we had tornados in the area which knocked out the internet for hours.

I keep a TV that is connected directly to the antenna, we can always watch that one, because its on a large UPS.

I can also use the PC that is running HDHomeRun software, and my main display, but use VLC Media Player.

Under plug and play devices, my homerun tuners show up and I can pick channels.

Alternately, you can use:
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:5004/auto/vC.N
where the Xs represent the actual IP address of the homerun tuner you want to watch and C equals the main channel number and N the sub channel number.
For example, if I wanted to watch channel 6.1 I would enter:
http://192.168.123.246:5004/auto/v6.1
in the network stream portion of VLC or most any other streaming player.
Perhaps this helps.

:) Works perfectly with VLC and no Internet
Main Stations in Orlando

open VLC Player
Click Media
Click open network stream
Paste one of these url's

http://192.168.0.147:5004/auto/v6.1
http://192.168.0.147:5004/auto/v2.1
http://192.168.0.147:5004/auto/v9.1
http://192.168.0.147:5004/auto/v35.1
Of course replace the ip with the ip of your HD Homerun

VLC should also list the HDHomeRun as a UPnP network source. Sometimes it tries to autoplay the first channel, so you press stop and then you can select the channel you want from the list.

The device works fine without an internet connection. I have been using SageTV and Channels DVR to record shows from it when the Internet was down. No issues were observed. What folks seem to be talking about is there software probably doesn't work. (i have not tested that) But I only use their software to do the initial setup of the device, firmware and to scan for the channels available and save the configuration. Once that is done, I never really go back into the HDHR software again. Unless new OTA channels show up. (almost never in my town, and if they are, they aren't in English) -Bill
