No Sound On Roku - Gianni

Post by Gianni »

Last March, I lost sound on the Roku Express and yesterday I lost it on the Ultra. When I reported this last March I had some advice to change my sound settings in the Roku all with no help. So now, the same issue with my main setup. Is that the way its going to stay?

Which specific model of Ultra?

The Ultra 4800X and newer models have AC3 and AC4 audio support. The older models deliver AC3 to the TV to decode and don't support AC4.

I have several Roku units. They are consistent. None of them transmit sound to a TV with the HD app. I like the app's new updated appearance, would be nice if it transmitted sound.
I am NOT asking SiliconDust to fix this. I rather suspect it is all on Roku. I can use Emby, it works fine. I would prefer you guys work on DRM :D

I have asked Roku for help. I wish myself good luck.

I am guessing that you have older Roku devices. The newer devices support the audio codec used in ATSC3

The new HDApp doesn't even transmit sound on ATSC 1.0.
2 different TVs, 2 different Rokus.
The old clumsy HDApp could do that.

Repeat: Silicon Dust, please don't waste time on fixing it.
Roku 'support' is a joke. I think it may be AI and not a real person.
I'm basically done with Roku.

Sound (and video) on Roku is 100% handled by the Roku player. How the Roku player handles sound varies by model.

If you have a Roku Ultra 4800X or newer you should have sound.

If you have an older Ultra, a Ultra LT, or a Stick the Roku player passes ATSC 1.0 audio to the TV to decode. This works on TVs except for Samsung. Sometimes it requires changing the sound settings in the Roku settings.

None of this is related to the HDHomeRun app or has changed with any release of the HDHomeRun app.

Nick,
I trust your judgment on this more than I trust my own recollection of the past.
It is very possible I have NEVER been able to get audio to work with the HDHomeRun app on my assorted combination of TVs and Roku units.
My apologies.
I'm 75. That's my excuse for my faulty memory, and I'm stickin' with it!
I know you're a busy man, and I appreciate you taking the time to respond.

If you can get the right combination of settings it sometimes works, but it definitely is subject to the whims of Roku as it sometimes breaks when the Roku gets a firmware update, and sometimes it unbreaks when it gets a different update. No rhyme or reason for it other than you're trying to use a device for something that the manufacturer doesn't support so sometimes things aren't going to work.

I got a Roku 4800X just for the heck of it, and it won't even allow the HDHomeRun app to successfully boot. The little bar moves over about half way for several seconds, then throws me back to the main screen.
Don't anybody at SiliconDust waste any more time on Roku. They're possessed.
Emby Server manages to work, even on ATSC 3.0 channels that aren't encrypted, and I guess the 4800X is allegedly better for other things somehow?

Maybe my old Panasonic plasma TV can't handle whatever audio the Roku is sending to it through HDMI ?
Other apps all work fine. I surrender. The fish look really pretty swimming around though!

Navigate to the HDHomeRun icon in the Roku launcher and press the * button on the remote... from there select Check for Updates to make sure you have the latest version of the HDHomeRun app.

Up to date.
version 82.0 build 20231110.
Don't lose one minute of sleep over it. I'm good. I'd almost bet it has something to do with having an antique plasma set! :D
Thanks Nick.

May fool with it on a newer TV set and see if it does any better.
