So perhaps the time has come for such change with the modern consumer hdhr's.
I'm not sure if you're actually serious or not. SD has been dead-set that their vision for networked tuners is the only way it will be. Do you remember the many requests for a grid-style guide? The "slice" was the way of the future ... until it wasn't (but no mention was ever made that their previous "no grid guide" was an error).

I'll believe that SD is fully pro-customer when they can deliver on all of their promises: full DRM support (live viewing, recording, and playback) for CableCARD and ATSC 3.0, full application usability without an active internet connection, and full feature parity across all supported platforms.

My point is their previous reasoning for no static ip gets thrown out once one can "guarantee" being able to connect from link local/apipa regardless of set ip address (interface gets bound to both).

I hate grid guide compared to slice so you won't convince me on that... to me grid is only good for "print", not use in an app but much of the reasonings for lack of grid for many years aren't able to be discussed due to forum rules and at the time i agree with such as they were put on notice. Though I'm still hopeful for drm recording of cable content, I do have more doubts it will get here before such for atsc 3 since they have to work on that even for live... I have mixed feelings on what should have been done there as I think a dtcp2 solution may have been easier to implement and also somewhat apply to prime and tackled such for both but then I also see that would have required an official SD manufactured client device (for dtcp2) and then we probably could never hope for any other device working with such (however if if they took such approach I feel they could have had a shot changing rules to allow 1080 and below content be served by dtcp-ip for atsc3 rather than dtcp2 which would have benefitted many and if such rule was changed dtcp specs for interoperability between the specs one can have a device that can transpose to 1080 for such transmission).

ATSC 3.0 DRM not needing internet: that's not a promise we can make (nor have we). That is decided by A3SA. Most aspects of ATSC 3.0 DRM is not up to us.
