Every network appliance I can think of has an option to set a permanent, static IP address.
DHCP fixed allocation won't work for me as there is no router on the intended network segment.
Be a handy feature to have, albeit for limited use cases.

The commercial TECH line allows for static IP assignments.
The consumer devices only support DHCP and self-assigned APIPA addresses.
From previous comments made by SiliconDust, I highly doubt this situation will change.

Many routers provide a means to apply a static IP address to a DHCP device. This is how I keep my Flex at a fixed IP
