Can't select channels Apple TV OS 17.0 21J5330e

Post by skeechan »

I can no longer select channels from the channel sidebar in tvOS 17.0 build 21J5330e running 20230510. When selecting a channel, it doesn't change the channel and focus just switches to the play icon in the lower bar. I can choose channels from the discover page, but not the side bar. If I use the side bar and go right to the current program, the behavior is the same, but if I continue right to a future program, I can select and go to the recording list for the channel. Unfortunately on tvOS there is no grid guide so the app is currently broken for viewing and am using Channels to do my tuning until this is fixed. I opened a ticket but haven't heard anything. I looked at testflight and according to the beta page there is a July build for tvOS, but it doesn't appear in the forum post for changes and the link to testflight just gives instructions but no way to get the email with the invite code.

17 beta has been known for interface issues. No one will chase down these errors because it is beta software. Most of the time its a direct Apple issue and generally gets fixed by the time they release the update. The recommendation is to roll back your Apple TV to the stable 16 version.

1) This problem seems to be unique to hdhomerun app on tvOS beta; it is not an issue even on iOS beta or osX (although I haven't let osX got to beta due to this bug, even though I've been using both alpha and beta releases on Mac for over 20 years!). I haven't heard of it on any other app, even though that has been suggested on this forum.

2) it is not *possible* to roll back tvOS on most apple tv's, including the 4k. rollback is only possible on one or two older models.

Just installed the release candidate and issue persists. Will have to wait for silicon dust to update.

Same.

Can’t update my TV’s because there’s no fix for a problem that’s been around since the first beta

I just installed TV OS17 official (non-beta) release on one of my Apple TVs. I can confirm this is a problem. When you select a channel from the slice guide it jumps the selection down to the Pause button at the bottom of the screen and the channel does not change.

I have the same issue. I have no issue on Mac OS. My work around is to AirPlay from my iPad to TV.

BTW: I tried to set only one channel as 'Favorite.' All others X-out. Had no effect. I do not know how to issue a 'restart' command to the tuner other than unplugging and re-plugging.

Same issue here after upgrading TVOS

Its been a while since HDHR updated the appletv app, and the only reason they updated it was to fix a major bug. Now's a good time to update it again!

Same here.. I can no longer change channels on the Official TV IOS 17 update… this is no longer beta. Looks like people have been reporting this for a month now. Pretty disappointing You guys haven’t done anything about it.

You’ve had months to do this. Please explain how you’re prioritizing it, and my patience have worn thin. Your app is a mess on tvOS. Maybe hire somebody from Channels to show you how it’s done. Just my two cents.

Apple regularly breaks things in early beta releases which then get fixed by Apple. We have been burnt by this in the past so now we wait for release-candidate iOS/tvOS/macOS builds from Apple. In this case Apple moved from release candidate to release very quickly.

Current target is for an app release to be submitted to Apple for review on Thursday. This release includes closed caption improvements for ATSC 1.0 and adds closed caption / subtitle support for DVB and ATSC 3.0.

Beyond this release - the next feature to be added to the HDHomeRun app for Apple TV will be parental controls. Adding this feature is the final step required to Nextgen TV certify the Apple TV platform.

Thank you for the update Nick… it’s rare You get a developer response so quickly. I think everyone’s just frustrated because like me it’s basically useless now because I can’t change channels on my Apple TV. Appreciate you!!

Until this gets fixed you can still change channels through the Discover screen. It's not ideal, but it works.

I have the same issue across all my upgraded Apple TV's. An upgrade would be appreciated. I am trying to sell this HomeRun setup as a replacement for Spectrum TV to my wife and it did not work when I tried it only on the discover tab. The wife acceptance factor is very low for that..
