NextGen TV Certification testing started

Post by nickk »

Quick update to keep everyone in the loop as to progress - we started NextGen TV Certification testing today.

Plan is to test a wide range of player devices.

I will post more as we have updates.

Did you finally get the A3SA API you needed?

Test server (only) came through a few days ago. Still waiting on Google to deliver their piece (requested in March).

Apple Tv 4k's and Firestick 4k MAX testing would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm hoping against hope for an official Kodi PVR client, but I'm still pretty sure because of the various A3SA requirements that it will not happen.

Nothing will prevent Kodi from launching any official SD (or other certified 3rd party) app, and content not otherwise protected should continue to work, but native Kodi support for content that requires a protected path would require an entirely new (closed source, immutable, certified, signed) platform/product, which is essentially the same issue that Kodi has with CableCARD tuners for channels that require a protected content path (and AFAIK that never happened).

You likely should contact the Kodi developers to ask about their plans (if any) to supporting a protected content path as, without that, no such support is going to be possible (on any platform that does not provide a protected content path; Kodi is not unique there).

Making good progress with testing.

Picked up a few minor compatibility things not seen in real-world testing that have been fixed.

Last few tests relate to parental controls so expect to see a parental control option in settings soon.

Can you explain what Google has to do with certification as related to your earlier post of waiting on them? If it has something to do withe HD app can't you bypass Google and let us sideload the app?

Isn't android/Google TV owned by Google. I would imagine they have to have pieces from each OS to support the standard as well.

Updated see answer below ;-)

The vendor who is doing the encryption service is Google Widevine.

Curious if you can push out a firmware update to address compatibility things which may help users now?

We are targeting a beta release next week. I don't think you will see a real world difference but it is a nice rollup of tweaks and compatibility improvements.

Will this roll out allow some form of decryption?

It seems to me this question has already been answered.
