The first thing to try is to take a couple zip ties and secure the two halves of the screen together, which improves the VHF gain.

I don't think you'll have much luck with the Antenna Direct VHF kit. It's designed to clip onto the back of narrower reflectors that don't pick up anything at VHF frequencies, while the reflector on the 4228 does pick up some VHF, probably more than the kit will.

The Antennas Direct HDTV VHF Retrofit Kit arrived today and my son and I re-arranged the 4228 antenna's placement, lowered it a bit, and installed the VHF antenna above it, securing it with zip ties (that was their recommended "universal" install). While we were still on the roof, I rescanned and saw that it was seeing channels in the 100 range. We secured it and came down. Initially, my tvOS HDHomeRun app had an issue, did another rescan, then then it only saw 106.1. So, I powered cycled my HDHomeRun CONNECT 4K tuner and did a couple of more rescans, before it finally saw the NEXTGEN channels.

If only a company which owned an antenna company would produce a product with a good set of VHF reflectors :-)
