Ethernet port dead

Post by doomedtx »

After a nearby lightning strike that seems to have propagated through the coax cables, the Ethernet port on my HDHR Prime has stopped working. Initially I was able to manually set the switch's port to 100Mbps FDX and the device connected again at that speed, but after a week or so it's stopped connecting entirely. It's otherwise working normally and able to display TV whenever it does connect, so I think it's specifically the internal network card. Other than trying to find a new (used) HDHR Prime somewhere, is there anything else I can try? Will a USB Ethernet adapter work on the USB port? It seems unlikely, but is there an internal network component that I can replace (like older laptops used to have)?

FWIW, I narrowed it down to the unit itself by connecting another piece of equipment to the same port on my switch, verifying that the switch and all intervening cables are functional. Even so I tried different cables and another switch, without success.

Ouch. Drop a quick email to support - they can arrange a discount off a new PRIME.

Note that if the lightning strike was anywhere near close the induced voltages to any/all wires (Ethernet included) can be excessive to the point of exceeding design limits.

The proper approach is to identify all damaged equipment and make a claim against your home insurance to cover the replacement costs.

I appreciate your advice. Fortunately the damage is too low for insurance to cover anything. I lost my cable modem and the HDHR prime. So far (~2 months) everything else is working. It took me so long to discover the HDHR was out because I use it for Channels DVR, which also records TV from TV Everywhere over the internet. I just happened to be looking at the server and noticed our hundreds of HDHR channels were missing.
