ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Well, I'm in the SF So. Bay Area and after seeing a NEXTGEN TV story on Ch. 11 (NBC Bay Area), on tonight's 11 O'Clock news, I did a rescan of my HDHomeRun CONNECT 4K (HDHR5-4K) and none of the NEXTGEN channels appeared. No 1XX.x channels. My listing stops at 68.4 (MeTV+). I updated my firmware to 20230505 before to doing the initial rescan(s). And I do have a SERVIO (HHDD-2TB), also updated to 20230505. Any ideas? Would appreciate any feedback from fellow Bay Area folks. Thanks in advance.

Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
The Bay Area's NextGen channels are coming from KRON's RF 7 signal, so you need a VHF capable antenna to get it.
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
I did as you suggested, but the recording would only play for about 15 sec. before defaulting to the end of stream and stop. So I put on live tv on those stations and found that they will not play reporting a drm problem. Of all the ATSC 3 stations only 2 will not play, those being NBC, CBS, but those are the ones I'm trying to record.
Any suggestions,
MCP

If you are getting DRM then there is nothing you can do. SD is working on getting certified for DRM along with all the other tuner companies out there. They have turned the DRM on before anyone could get certified. SD is most likely months out from having it.
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
I should have said protection. They didn't specifically say DRM, but I assume that is what is meant. I was surprised that it was limited to just a few channels and not all.jxxaxxy wrote: ↑Mon May 08, 2023 9:19 am If you are getting DRM then there is nothing you can do. Thanks for all your help,

Yes its not everyone. At one point none of them had it on. Just depends on what the parent company wants at this point. Yes protection is probably the correct term and not DRM.

102.1 KTVU-HD
104.1 KRON-TV
105.1 KPIX-TV
107.1 KGO-HD
111.1 KNTV
114.1 KDTV-TV
And now 111.1 KNTV (at 1080p!) has also gone DRMkyl416 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 04, 2023 1:23 pmThat's because KRON's ATSC 1.0 channels are now being hosted by other stations in the market:
4.1 KRON is on KTVU's UHF 31 signal (and their UHF 26 translator for San Jose)
4.2 AntennaTV is on KNTV's VHF 13 signal
4.3 Rewind and 4.4 Charge are on KBCW's UHF 28 signal
4.5 ShopLC is on KGO's VHF 12 signal (and their UHF 35 translator for San Jose)
Also word is Univision enabled DRM protection on 114.1 KDTV-TV yesterday.
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Thanks. I debated at the beginning of the transition to HD whether or not to go UHF only or get a VHF/UFH/FM antenna... Guess I'll have to add a Hi-VHF antenna. Any suggestions/recommendations? As I have an "old" Channel Master 4228. Thanks again!

Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Nice! I have the "new" CM 4228 (pre-repack, not sure if there is a new-new one since then) with the horizontal poles, and it works great for high VHF here in the Austin area. We have a single high VHF, Fox 7 on RF 7.
There are, of course, many choices in this space. I like the large, bay-style because it fits well in my attic with lots of lattice construction.
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
I also had the old (now quite rusty) 4228 and just replaced it with a CM - 1776 model and it's working well for rf7 here.

Those devices with sound and no video are missing the new HEVC codec. I had this same issue on my Windows 11 PC. I had to pay Microsoft $1 in their app store to get the codec installed.mcp wrote: ↑Thu Apr 20, 2023 5:03 pm I recently noticed that there are new channels available and assumed it is because ATSC 3.0 is now available in the SF Bay Area. However I have seen that HDHomeRun now tries to use these new channels for recording the shows I have set up. The problem is that these recordings while work just fine in the HDHomeRun App on my iPad, I find that on my FireTV I only get sound and on my linux computer using kodi I only get video no sound. Is there a setting I'm missing? I've tried changing the setting to restrict it to use the previous channel when recording but even though it was changed it still uses the ATSC 3 channel when it records. Very annoying. Any solutions?

You can watch it though without installing a codec if you can install VLC on the device and watch TV on VLC.
Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Thanks for the input, it's appreciated. I'm gonna go with the Antennas Direct Hi-VHF TV antenna reception kit for now. And if things don't work out, I'll consider the newer Channel Master EXTREMEtenna 80 or the Pro-Model.

Re: ATSC 3.0 Finally Coming to SF Bay Area
Just an FYI, there's also KRCB on RF 5 which has additional PBS programming and is the only source of Create in the Bay Area, if you want to pick that up you might want to get a full band model that's also capable of VHF-lo instead.
If you're in range of them, there's also KURK-LD on RF 3 and KSQL-LD on RF 4 who carry diginets like the California Music Channel, Country Music Channel, Retro TV and Heartland, both of them plan to move to the Sutro tower.

To my surprise, the CM-1776 also pulls in rf5 and rf6 for me, which the CM-4228 never had done. It doesn't lock reliably on rf4, however.
