Tuners powered by POE

Post by feldman821 »

I know I'm in the minority, but I'd like to put in a plug to have your tuners (especially the ATSC3.0 ones) be powered via Power over Ethernet to save on cabling around my TV.

Not sure what you mean by "save on cabling around my tv" as most don't have their HDHR devices anywhere near their tv.

It is possible to power the latest tuners with POE with an adapter (it would need to change such to appropriate voltage anyway) but I don't suggest it as one of the main causes of issues is the power supply and making sure it has clean power which often poe lacks.

As signcarver said, I am not sure what you mean by saving on cabling, but an appropriate[0] PoE splitter can sort of do what you want (well, what you want is not having to deal with a separate wall wart), without asking that SD adds another (estimated) $10 BoM (with increased costs to everyone) to the tuner, which would include an engineering respin (which is likely to cost a lot more per tuner). Note that even with a PoE splitter the tuner must be located in an environment which meets the devices environmental requirements (i.e. an attic is likely to be too hot).

[0] You would need to verify the voltage, current, and ripple from the PoE splitter meets the requirements of power supplies as SD has documented.
