BEst Streaming box for HDHomeRun with the 3.0 ATSC tuner?

Post by REM777 »

Hi - any suggestions as to what streaming box or stick runs the HDHomeRUn the best - IE correct decoders for sound etc. I noticed the GUI for the Roku is very rudimentary VS a firetv 4K firestick , Any issues with the Appletv - sounds like the latest OS from apple tv killed the box for hdhomerun ? thanks

Best would probably be a recent lg tv not a box. Just about Amany android tv box (other than shield currently) should handle video well but audio will rely on online transcoding (currently only stereo). I have not tried it but there was a recent report from clarkss12 and nickk about a mecool km2 plus box that nickk said "this box has potential"

Personally I wouldn't settle for just 1 box/platform as they all have their faults/idiosyncrasies.

The HDHomeRun app on the latest Apple TV 4K running tvOS 16.0 works fine on all channels.

Fine is subjective. One of the things specifically asked for was "correct decoders for sound" which the appletv lacks (uses the stereo cloud transcoding service, though output can be "on" all channels it isn't 5.1. There is also the new issue of apple breaking some interlaced content with an update. It is these updates (whether software from SD or firmware of client manufacturer) as to why I suggest having alternative options as "everything" occasionally breaks and there will be some streams that one device may handle better than another.

For most it does play fine... so does the $20 onn from walmart.

well, I use the Channels app (paid app) on my ATV4K Generation 4 device. I get "Multichannel" sound, which is 5.1 on my Marantz 7011 AVS. Is there another device, app that is suited better for my HRHD5-4k?

The best device for sound would be one that is already licensed/supports for AC-4. Channels does provide a fairly good decoder but it still needs some work for some content (but would agree it is better than the online transcoding service SD uses until such does support all audio channels properly). That is why I suggest a recent LG TV if that is a concern (for most it wouldn't be a real concern). Each device has had its issues at one time or another. One reason I still recommend the shield is that they do seem to make updates like apple does (other manufacturers would prefer to sell a new box next month/year or two than really update the existing one). But even the shield has had its issues and is currently unusable for many. Recently the tvOS 16 update is causing issues with some interlaced content... it may only be interlaced h.264 (i.e. europe) but might include interlaced hevc (some atsc 3 stations).

One of the reasons I suggest the onn (though it doesn't support ac4) is that it works very well especially for the price and I find it hard to knock a $20 device for a hiccup on occasion. Go up to above $60, I'll notice everything. and at above $100 the device better be "perfect" at handling such (I do understand some updates "temporarily" causing issues as that is often the nature of updates and especially with atsc 3 there can be station updates/changes, software updates, and client device updates all affecting the final output).

I would also vote for the ONN Android smart box as the best choice at this time. Other than AC4, which is a stumbling block for almost all devices, the ONN is rock solid.

I noticed that the HDhomerun apps work and look different depending on which box they are on - was looking for the best user experience. The only reason I have a roku is because of airplay - like to stream all the cool stuff that Big Tech doesn't want me to look at. So with Apple TV - the HB Homerun crew suggesting to just not update to the IOS 16? I got around the sound decode issue with my Harmon Kardon SB26 sound bar - has all the dolby sh__ inside - anyway - the SB26 is a great sounding soundbar - but the software integration with remotes and Bluetooth pairing couldn't be any worse -

Which LG ? Post 2017 ? OLED or LED? ( I am not current with TV design - am now looking again to reduce power consumption and perhaps better integration with HD Homerun ) Does the LG support all the apps like netflix, HDhomerun amazon video youtube & youtubeTV ? thanks My viera tvs app store is utterly defunct - never really got populated - a total misfire at future proofing

BTW - never even heard of ONN lol ..thank you !!

Any lg tv released 2019 or later should support ac-4, though I prefer to say 2020 as then it is listed in specs on the data sheet. A few lg tv's prior may support such. Their smart tv's with webos should have all the major apps and in the US that includes HDHomeRun (though very unlikely if you stick to major retailers, it is possible to get an import model that "refuses" to use US app store and may have issues getting HDHomeRun app, i have particularly heard this on some sub 32 inch models)

It's a strange thread since many of the posts have nothing to do with ATSC 3.0. There are a few boxes that support AC-4, most in a way that the HD app doesn't support, but the new FireTV Cube 2022 does mention AC-4 https://developer.amazon.com/docs/fire- ... -cube.html.

Unfortunately I don't think there is a true AC-4 box that supports GB Ethernet so none qualify as "best" in my standard.

There are two ways that Android devices can do AC4 - the HDHomeRun app supports both ways.

Thanks, my thread viewtopic.php?p=382422 on the Xiaomi 4K got deleted (your forum retention policy is from a bygone era) without resolution so I wasn't sure and I am still not sure if it or the Mecool support AC-4 pass through. Both are just 100MbE too.

The HDHomeRun app supports AC4 decode on both the Xiaomi 4K and the new Mecool box. These products use the fake AC4-passthrough style approach to decode AC4.

Wouldn't you say the app simply support audio output since there isn't a box that I am aware of that can outputs spatial AC-4 should it become available. (hopefully that is the point of AC-4) Your service certainly doesn't do it. That is what I am trying to point out to the OP.
