DHCP fails after upgrade to v20220822 - gumshoenoir

Post by gumshoenoir »

Today I upgraded my @HDHomeRun_US Flex4k tuners firmware to 20220822. After reboot they didn't obtain a DHCP address on my local LAN as they have so many other times through power outages and server upgrades galore. they report a 169.254. address.

Code: Select all

Hardware ModelHDFX-4K
Firmware Version 20220822
I see this in the 'system log' from the web page linked from the HDHomeRun setup utility

Code: Select all

19700101-00:00:01 System: reset reason = power on
19700101-00:00:02 System: network link 100f
19700101-00:00:03 System: ip address obtained: 169.254.48.44 / 255.255.0.0
19700101-00:00:26 System: myhdhomerun_sync: webclient error (dns failed)
19700101-00:09:28 System: myhdhomerun_sync: webclient error (dns failed)
19700101-00:19:26 System: myhdhomerun_sync: webclient error (dns failed)
19700101-00:30:07 System: myhdhomerun_sync: webclient error (dns failed)
19700101-00:40:29 System: myhdhomerun_sync: webclient error (dns failed)
Is there a way to force a DHCP request and monitor debug info?

I tested my DHCP server;

Are there previous firmware versions available for download? I wanted to try reverting to a previous release.

For troubleshooting purposes, I plugged in one of the 4K tuners directly into my router / dhcp server and disconnected all LAN segments. Powered it on, waited for solid green, re plugged in my LAN, re scanned tuners with HDHomeRun Setup utility, checked MAC address on this tuner then looked at corresponding system log on the tuner web page. I had a valid IP address on my LAN. Unfortunately, when I moved the tuner back to the antenna coax location, requiring power disconnect, I was then assigned an unwanted "System: ip address obtained: 169.254.52.164 / 255.255.0.0"

Note that before I upgraded the firmware this morning, I cycled the AC power and received a valid ip address for my LAN. It's looking like a bug in this v20220822 firmware ???

Is there a way to revert the firmware? Where can I download a previous version of the firmware?

Is there a gui or command line utility that I can cause the tuner to release and request a new DHCP lease?

Additional information and further testing

The tuners pass through two (2) ethernet hubs to get to the router. For grins I ran a long cable directly from the router to one of the tuners bypassing the hubs. I still received the dreaded 169.254 address.

On this LAN is a Proxmox cluster with three nodes containing many containers and VMs, one a Windows 10 VM, as well as several hosts with docker containers, a Truenas core, Truenas scale with several apps running.

The Truenas scale has a plex server app that's been running fine accessing the two (2) 4k tuners for many months.

The devices "always" have an apipa address but I don't recall seeing such in logs as being obtained without a rogue dhcp server configured for such (I thought it just stated it was using that ip if dhcp didn't work prior to obtaining a dhcp address but I could be wrong). Typically if it is using such address, it continued to try dhcp an even in the poorest networks would do so within a few minutes.

I have seen some dhcp servers on occasion have issue with reservations particularly if it thinks it (ip) is already in use. "On a firmware update the device quickly restarts which can trigger such. I have even seen some servers "hand out" apipa when firewall rules/dhcp reservation have no information for the device (basically locking down everything putting it in "guest")

Is there any fix for this? I am having the same problem. I think my tuner updated to this firmware today and since then I cannot get it to work.

On the windows 10 workstation that I was running the HDHomeRun (HDHR) config and gui setup utilities I had a HyperV instance acting as a DHCP server on the 169.254.x.y that the HDHR utilities would prefer over the 192.168.1.0/24 NAT lan DHCP server. I exited all the HDHR utilities on the win10 workstation, restarted the tuners which then received ip addresses on the 192.168.1.0/24 NAT lan.

I suggested to support that their utilities should take this into account and prefer an ip from from the NAT DHCP server if available over the 169.254.x.y address however I've received no response and they closed the trouble ticket without further comment.

I think something about your setup might be tripping HDHomeRun Setup into link-local recovery mode.

Can you please enable "send diagnostic information" on the Advanced tab in HDHomeRun Setup, quit and restart HDHomeRun Setup, then post back with the Device ID of your HDHomeRun.

10A302C2 and 10A34A44 are my two 4k units. I didn't restart them; I did move around the menus. After I post this I'll exit the setup utility.

Interesting - I see the problem. It will be fixed in the next beta release (not today's beta release... there will be another later this week)

Something more complicated is going on (the code already protects against the situation I thought you were seeing).

Can you please run ipconfig /all from this machine, save in a txt file, and PM it to me.
