Tuner instability after 12-2021 update

Post by msm »

HD Homerun Prime HDHR3-CC on Windows 8.1 pro running WMC. About 9 years old
Last months had some low signal /missing files alerts and pixelated sections on MC. Defragged, had Spectrum out to check signal strength, they changed splitter and saw improvement. Updated HDHR software and firmware and I now get recordings dropping midway through (experienced 1 minute/15 min/30 minutes in). Observed tuner blinking green and the tuner doesn’t “release” consistently,

Reran set up, problem persists. Any hope to fix?

I would double check power supply as typically such issues with power supply manifest at the reboot after a firmware update.

Checked plug connections, and no longer dropping recordings early-still getting “weak signal”/”file not found” type errors periodically. If I stop and resume often can work through.
Any way to determine weak link/cause of these (computer/signal/tuner/WMC)

Please go into HDHomeRun Setup, Advanced tab, and check the Send diagnostic information box, then run a channel scan, and restart the PC. Reproduce the issue in WMC on live TV, and reply back with the time it happened, channel it happened on, and the device ID for your HDHomeRun, and we will check the logs.

Did steps-improved performance until 2/7. Will do the steps again and try again

12:17 pm eastern 2/14 131B37CD “stall”

12:21 pm weak signal
12:22 stall
131B37CD
Channel 785
Stall=freezes then speeds up to catch up

12:33 pm weak signal started when I tried to open file on Air Video HD on iPad (previously not an issue (increased problems getting AV HD to play files the last couple days)
Channel 810

12:52 same problem with AVHD(weak signal/freeze) long time to go back to live feed

Everything looks fine on the HDHomeRun's side. No signal issues or anything like that. When using WMC, there's no way to get diagnostic data directly that would show anything for the disk or network. You might want to check the Windows Event Viewer application in the Windows Logs > System section at the time of the problems and see if it reports and disk, controller, or filesystem messages that are showing with a yellow or red icon. These would typically indicate a failing drive. Moving parts are almost always the first to go, and if you got 9 years out of a mechanical drive, that's a good long life.

Looks like a number of disk errors although the scans all show they’re both OK.

Looks like I’m going to have to buy something new-I don’t think I’ll be sticking with Windows 8, are there good resources on how to transition a long-time Media Center user into something new?

When I was primarily using wmc, I would tear through drives within a few months until I symlinked the buffer to its "own" separate drive, I've even heard of people moving such to ram, once that was done even previously failed drives would record properly again. Of course I had 24 tuners and several extenders so I wouldn't expect such to show up as quickly for others but many of my clients had similar things happen within a couple of years. It became a practice of mine to install an additional drive that was used for that as well as near daily backups of some important directories.

Scans aren't necessarily going to detect drive errors unless you have a scan that takes ages to read every sector from the disk. If there are errors in the logs, something is wrong.

Transitioning to something new depends entirely on whether you're in one of the few Spectrum markets that doesn't DRM everything, or if you're like most Spectrum people and stuck with pointless DRM. If you have DRM, you're basically going to have to break out the holy water and incantations to keep WMC running. If you don't, then you can look at other options like the HDHomeRun DVR, Plex, Emby, Channels, and NextPVR.

Got new SDD hard drive and external SDD drive. After selecting computer on HDHomeRun Start-up things going smoothly except for no audio through laptop or HDMI connection (running OK with usb external speakers).

Nothing showing up on Sound/Playback (disabled and Disconnected Devices bot checked) Any thing to suggest?

Do you get other sounds from the laptop or HDMI?
