Sporatic pixelation across multiple tuners

Post by crb_rigger »

Device 1
Model: HDHR3-CC
Device ID: 131051FE
Firmware: 20210624

Device 2
Model: HDHR3-CC
Device ID: 1318FE59
Firmware: 20210624

Channel selection does not matter. Every 10-20 minutes I experience 5-15 seconds of pixelation. This occurs on recordings and watching live.
The pixelation started on every recording I have viewed, beginning Oct 11.
Firmware was updated to the latest version Oct 14 around 13:15ET. No improvement.
Send Diagnostic Information was enabled Oct 14 13:47ET.

Both units show:
Status
Card Authentication success
Card OOB Lock weak
Card Validation success
Is this a cable company issue or something else?
Thank you for your time.

Both PRIME units are reporting good signal. What are you using for DVR?

Does the pixelation occur on your older recordings, and does it occur in the same place every time? If it happens on everything you watch and it's not always in the same places, I think you're having a system issue. HGST has built some NAS drives that use SMR, not sure if yours is or not, but over time SMR drives can start to really tank performance-wise. I had 4 Western Digital Red 6TBs that were SMR and they started choking after about 4 years of use. The symptoms were the same, pixelation on everything, but in my case it was more like every 15-20 minutes not seconds.

What happens if you just play the .MPG file via Media Player or VLC (I see Windows 7); basically something other than WMC, but on the same system? Same, different?

The recordings (.WTV files) are moved to a server daily and are usually played from there on the original WMC or on Plex (transcoded). The pixelation occurs during the same time frames on WMC & Plex, so it's in the recording.

I did reset the switch the tuners and TV are attached to. I will see if the pixelation still occurs.

Typically when I had such issues with wmc, it was with the recording drive and I fixed that by moving the buffer to a "dedicated" drive and would need to replace that drive every couple of years. In my case such showed up pretty quickly as I had a dozen tuners but my family and friends (and clients) with 3- 8 tuners would often see such after a couple of years. But what was interesting is that just moving the buffer with a symlink would allow them to continue using their primary recording drive without issue even when recording 6+ streams. I do not recommend an ssd for such.

I would also look at potential network issues as the udp method is often prone to such when there is other traffic on the network. Another thing that i have seen work in some cases was an additional switch between tuner and wmc machine.

I have been running the same setup for 6+ years. I do have another drive. I can replace the recording drive with a larger 7200 vs current 5400.

The tuners and PC are all on one switch.
