Fire stick 4K hanging up during live viewing.

Post by Thunderthud »

I am having reoccurring problems with version 80210813 going black screen, on live video, after watching for a period of time. After which I have tried switching channels, to no avail, I cant get video back. But I can exit the app.

When this happens, other apps become erratic as well. Have to either restart the fire stick, or uninstall and reinstall the HDhomeRun app. Stopping app, clearing data and cache don't help

I reset the fire stick to factory settings. Same issues

All other apps, Prime, Netflix, YouTube run fine. Issues only appear with this app version

Can there possibly be a memory leak issue with the app (don't really know what I'm talking about on this.. but I remember issues in the past being attributed to this).

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing similar issues.

Thanks!

Sounds like the hardware video decoder in the FireTV is crashing. First, make sure your FireTV is running the latest update from Amazon. It should be since it normally auto-updates, but just in case do a check. Second, make sure you're using the correct power supply that came with the stick and not some random phone charger or a USB port on your TV. Weird things happen when it can't get enough power. Third, make sure there's adequate ventilation around the stick. It's not nearly as bad for heat issues as earlier models were, but it can still overheat under high load if you've got it trapped in a rats next of cables.

Jason, thanks for your reply... But, it is the power supply that came with it, it is running the latest update, and it's got plenty of ventalation.
So... I don't know where to go from here :-(

Oh, and it is happening while playing recordings as well now... hadn't been playing any on that TV lately so I just noticed...

I would agree seems like the videos decoder issue that previously plagued the fire sticks last year. Worked completely fine until the 20210813 update. Every channel I have watched are now hanging after watching a bit and going black causing all video apps to stop functioning and requires a reboot. This has occurred on 4 different channels (freeform, discovery, paramount and NBC) also occured on recordings at random times in the recording. The only fix is to reboot and then will happen again post reboot.

Exactly!
Thanks...
Good to know that I'm not the only one with this issue.

I watched Comet for about 10 minutes in the new app version on the Fire Stick 4K before it crashed. It doesn't give any errors, just abruptly quit to the menu.
I think these low power Android devices just don't have the horsepower for live TV. I hooked my TV up to my Linux PC for the time being.

My old "1K", 2nd Gen Firestick works fine though with even less power, and the same software.
And the 4K firestick didn't used to "give up the ghost" with previous HDHR version (aside from the stuttering after fast forwarding).

Food for thought "FoodLioon"...

If you've read these forums for a while you'll see a trend with Android devices. They'll work well for a while then break after a update. Mibox is one that comes to mind. Like I said elsewhere, I'm hesitant to throw any more money at Android devices.

Yes, my "MiBox" is in the trash heap as well.
However, my 2017 Shield is still going strong, and my other firesticks are plodding along, although slowly.
I have faith that Nickk can and will fix this current issue.

The latest release uses hardware decode on the modern Fire TV devices. This results in better picture quality (and 60fps vs 30fps) but is relying on the hardware codec to be solid.

If you are seeing this video stall issue please enable "send diagnostic information" in the HDHomeRun app Settings menu, then when you next experience the problem please post back with the Device ID of your HDHomeRun and the date+time the stall occurred. It also helps to stay in the stalled state for a few minutes so more information is logged.

New Fire stick 4K wont playback DRM channels -Phoenix

Post by Garyr »

Just bought a new 4k firestick to replace my xbox360 that will no longer playback DRM channels since cox changed the way they are delivering DRM content. However, the new 4k Firestick is also either going to a blank screen, or giving an error "unable to play channel: Content protection error" when playing back DRM channels. I can playback everything on my W8.1 media center, and from a Samsung Galaxy s21 phone without any problems. My HDHomerun app is version 20210813 - 20210817. I have also been seeing posts saying they are having various playback DRM issues with other android devices.
Is this a known issue that is being worked on, or should I return the 4k firestick and get something else? thanks for your help, Gary

You need an ANDROID TV device not a FIRE device for DRM content as amazon does not provide the ability to make sure they maintain a protected path including verification of the operating system the way google does. I would stick with real AndroidTV and GoogleTV devices not a tv device that happens to run android.
My favorite cheap ones are the new Google Chromecast with GoogleTV (not the old chromecasts) and the Tivo Stream 4k as well as the JetStream 4K. On the higher end, not cheap, an nvidia shield though there is certain content that can be tripped up by the nvidia bug.

Ok Nick... Finally had a chance to get back to this...
Running my Firestick 4k, (I have two of them, both exhibiting the same issue). Started running live video about an hour ago (around 2 PM EDT today 8/23) and walked away. When I checked on it, the video had gone off/dark/black. I have left it up in the stalled state, as you requested. I had turned diagnostics on when I first started up. My device ID's are listed in my profile....

Thanks!

Thanks Thunderthud - found it in the log.

It looks like these are two different situations.
