How to convince my device to use a proxy server?

Post by sdust »

New user warning

I just purchased a DVR subscription for my HDHR5-4K but it does not seem to be active. I suspect a possible reason is the fact Connect 4k, unlike everything else on my network, does not use proxy. This results in the device connecting from a different IP and failing to link to the DVR subscription.

Any suggestions?

For the DVR to work, everything (at least tuner and engine as well as most clients) will need to be in the same subnet... you will probably need to connect to SD to activate from the same public ip as the device connects to SD from (but only once) as it will probably need to use http discovery once but they may have modified something (or perhaps will) to also try hdhomerun.local for the activation (though some browsers may object to retrieving a .json via http (rather than https) from a .local and/or your "proxy" also may screw such up for mDNS) to get at least one tuner on your account as once they get that one tuner on your account, the app could add any additional tuners later. Note that often people state the dvr as inactive when it isn't as there was a page that seemed to state so but it states that for everybody.

Once you get a tuner on your account, everything is done through broadcast discovery as far as locating the devices which requires everything to be on the same subnet and provided you have your local lan configured as such the proxy shouldn't matter but the tuner and the DVR engine must be able to reach out to the internet periodically but "can" connect from different IPs as far as operation.
