Sound issues in macOS 10.15.1

Post by pssonline » Wed Oct 30, 2019 1:13 am

Hi,

On 10.15 (Catalina) sound from the 20190621 app was fine, regardless of whether early access to features was turned on or not.

Since 10.15.1 (updated this morning) sound on AU HD channels (that are native Dolby sound) is really low and garbled. Sound on SD channels is normal.

Doesn't seem affected by early access being checked or not

ETA: More testing, HD channel specific.

Anyone else?

John

I've found a potential work around by changing the option under Configure Speakers to Dolby 5.1.. more info here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3639822

The macOS Catalina changelog does make vague reference to Dolby Atmos support, I'm not sure what it is specifically about 10.15.1 that's affected the HDHomeRun app and necessitated this change in audio config. I've never come across it before.

Config was/is Mac Mini Late 2012 with sound via a Sound Blaster Omni USB. Yes, it's 5.1 capable but I've been running Logitech Z906s with just front left, right, centre and sub with no issues for years.

Any further input would be appreciated!

What was it set to before you changed it to Dolby 5.1?

Can you enable the Send diagnostic information option in the HDHomeRun > Preferences menu, then watch for 5 minutes with it in 5.1 mode, and then again for 5 minutes in stereo mode? Reply back with the device ID for your HDHomeRun and the times you watched in each mode and we'll check the logs to see if anything unusual is reported.

Device ID is 122115A1

Watched in 5.1 as per workaround from 7.51PM AEDT

Switched to Stereo and restarted HDHomerun app at 7.58PM AEDT. Initially sound was OK, checked settings again, tried Surround 2.0 and then back to Stereo, sound garbled and have recreated the issue.

Chanel 10 HD Melbourne (13) both times.

Not to overcomplicate this, but behaviour post-workaround seems to have changed things a bit too.
