100 signal strength, 100 signal quality, and symbol quality bouncing

Post by pau1ward » Mon Oct 21, 2019 1:30 pm

I was really hoping the LTE filter I just put in was going to fix the problem I have on Channel 50.x here in Greenville SC.

I have a constant 100 signal strength and constant 100 signal quality, but the symbol quality bounces from 100 down to 23 and all points in between.

GE Pro 29884 antenna mounted in the attic, Antra LTE filter attached directly to the HDHR5-4US, do not have amplifier. PC, and Xbox are both connected via Ethernet.

47 other channels come in clean with no drops....only channels 50.x WNGS-LD

Any suggestions?

Sorry in advance if this has been posted already, but I have not found it...

Thanks,
Paul

Please enable the sending of diagnostic data on the HDHomeRun, run a channel scan, and watch live TV on the problem channel for at least 10 minutes (see https://info.hdhomerun.com/info/trouble ... iagnostics). Reply back with the device ID for your HDHomeRun and we will check the logs.

Everything looks pretty reasonable to me. Couple of really strong channels, but not enough that overload should be a concern. Any other electronics in close proximity to the HDHomeRun that might be interfering with that specific frequency? Has that channel ever worked?

There are times it works pretty well.
Not sure what could be interfering with just that channel.
Was hoping you would tell me the station is messed up and the Digital Signal is hosed :-)

Thanks for looking

It might be. Problems that happen at the very lowest levels can't always be identified from the log data because all we see is what comes out at the end. Sometimes there are patterns that we can identify based on experience, but in this case, things look fine, so it could be either a station issue or some sort of oddball local issue.

In case more data is helpful, I'm in the same area and have similar (the same?) symptoms with channels 50.x. In my case the signal strength and quality are in the 95-98% range and symbol quality ranges from around 20-100%. I'm using:
HDHR4-2US (device ID 104908B4)
ClearStream 2V antenna
Channel Master LTE filter

My HDHR is located near my TV, if that matters. I just enabled diagnostics, scanned, and watched channel 50.1 for ~10 minutes. I'm not super-interested in these channels myself, just thought some additional data may help out the OP.

May just be antidoctal, but I see symbol quality bouncing a lot on 50.x as well. I'll leave diagnostics on as of 8am EDT for a bit leaving the channel locked in for as long as I can. Right now the symbol quality is 100% for me, with a signal quality around 88%. This is a bit on the high side from what I've experienced from the station, though.

If I refresh regularly, I see the symbol quality is very unstable, which seems unusual vs other stations I check on. To see a dip down to 75-80% on a channel that is normally this locked in seems "normalish", but not huge drops down to 40-50% like I'm seeing on this frequency.

The fact that it's happening for multiple people on both gen 4 and gen 5 devices strongly points to it being a problem on the station's side. Gen 4 and gen 5 use completely different reception components from different companies, so even if there was some weird edge case that caused problems for one, it wouldn't affect the other the same way. If it was an environmental problem, it probably wouldn't be affecting 3 different environments. Are any of you seeing problems with a TV's builtin tuner?

In my case the performance is subjectively better using the TV's built-in tuner, but it still breaks up occasionally. For example, using the HDHR + HDHR app on macOS, the image may stay stable for 3-8 seconds at a time before breaking up; using the TV it will stay stable for 30 seconds or more at a time.

My TVs seem to do about the same as the HDHR.

I have tried to find contact info for the station, but have been unsuccessful.

Having just recently cut the cord, I really would like to have Rev'n (50.3) cause I miss Motor Trend TV, but not enough to pay for a streaming subscription :-)

Doesn't do much good if you're trying to DVR it or have limited bandwidth, but you can at least stream Rev'n online (in HD even) at https://www.revntv.com/watch/watch-online/.

Some of their FCC paperwork lists a Timothy Hurley as the engineering contact. The email addresses the company uses are in the format of first initial followed by last name at luken.tv. I don't want to put the actual address here because spammers pick it up, but I trust you can figure it out from what I said. If all three of you sent emails saying you're having problems with WNGS and it's happening on multiple different TVs and the HDHomeRun, and adjusting your antenna hasn't helped, and you've talked to other people nearby who are having the same issues, they might be inclined to have someone take a look.

All channels on 50.x have been rock solid for at least 4 days now, through a variety of weather conditions! Not sure who fixed what, but glad it works.....

I am having this exact same issue Chicago CBS Channel 2.1 and I am only a mile from the station.
I get %100 across the board on all other channels expect 2 which has symbol bouncing around.
I have tried to move the attic antenna ( yes it is in the attic ), I tried grounding the antenna, and even ran the coax cable differently.
I have not yet tried to connect directly to the TVs tuner but I suspect I will have the same issue.
