Still hung up on font size

Post by msuckow » Fri Jun 14, 2019 10:47 am

I've been impressed by the progress made on the new UI over the last few weeks. Showstoppers such as crashes and lack of MCE remote support have been addressed. Good job!

Given all the progress, I was surprised that I was still using the old UI most of the time. The reason is the huge font size in the new UI. I still much prefer the old UI's ability to display 10 episodes on one screen. I hope that the option to change font sizes will be added before the new UI becomes the only option.

Agreed, the new fonts are much too large. Couple that with the way things are misaligned on the screen leaving large empty spaces the new UI just doesn't get enough of the right info to the screen yet.

I was wondering if the app takes into consideration the display resolution: 720p v. 1080p v. 4k. The app should scale the fonts accordingly and not use the same size for all resolutions.

That is a 2-foot UI concept - where you are sitting close to the screen and you go higher resolution to fit more on the screen.

The HDHomeRun app is a 10-foot UI. If you have a 50" TV and you are sitting 10 feet away it doesn't matter if it is 720p or 4k - fonts still need to be sized large enough to be readable.

We have a sofa set up at the office with distances marked out - we can move the sofa and can swap out different sizes of TV for evaluating UI concepts.

...apparently you don't have any post 50 year olds with post 50 year old vision on the 'testing team' or you would re-evaluate your testing/developing methods...

Contact these guys - along with those 'antennae' you're recommending these make a wonderful end table addition to any modern UI.

I have a 52" 1080 TV, and our sofa is 10-12 feet away. I am 56-years old and I never thought that the fonts were too small.
Clearly, my preferences shouldn't drive the design, but I would advocate for a font size option in the UI.

I have a 55" LG OLED and I sit a good 10-12 ft away. The guide is useless because I can't read anything. I have to get up and stand about 6 feet before I can read it (even WITH my glasses). The images just compound the issue for me with poor contrast or conflicting colors.

I may use the DVR and live TV but I simply can not use the GUIDE as it is. Now that XBox can now accept numeric input, I just use the numbers on the remote.

Are there any guides that work for you? Such as a cable box guide or something similar?

Really? I feel like some of the text is huge. It seems just about right on my 27” from 12’ away. Large and easily readable on my 52” at 12’. On my 110” at 12’ it’s insanely huge.

I think some size options would be nice.

Options (font sizes included) are nice, but one should also recognize that there are various FCC and ADA suggested/mandated "defaults" to not avoid certain compliance issues (there is a big push for accessibility (with potentially hefty fines for non-compliance) across all content presentation mechanisms in progress). So some of the defaults are not going to be great for some of the people some of the time.

I have difficulty believing that even if you had 20/20 vision. I find all the logos and images just too distracting. I only see 4 and half channels on my 55 in TV. Give me an option for text only so I can see more channels at once and I could deal with the 'slice' (which I dislike intensely).
