Quatro & 20190603beta1

Post by bluehorizon » Sun Jun 09, 2019 1:54 pm

@nickk

I have been a long time HDHomerun user (Duos, Primes, now Quatros) for over ten years. Currently, I have two Quatros.

I upgraded both to the latest firmware: 20190603beta1. Never had a problem in the past with firmware upgrades.

Now, one of my Quatros will not reappear on the network. Unlike the functional Quatro, the missing Quatro's Ethernet jack has two solid lights.

What can I do to fix this unit? I have tried swapping Ethernet cables, power cycling, etc.

Thank you

I have seen more than a dozen quatros (including 3 that I use regularly) have an issue that behaves as if a capacitor has gone bad... usually this comes up after a firmware upgrade or a quick power cycle... For me the solution has always unplug for 15 minutes or more. (The first time I saw this, I unplugged it overnight).

By the way, in all the cases, there never seemed to be a subsequent occurrence provided one always waited a few seconds to reconnect power but once in that state, it seems like a capacitor had to fully discharge before allowing it to come back up (thus why I describe it as that issue), though I have seen a couple that seem to have the issue right after firmware upgrades a couple of times but not always.

Interesting hypothesis.

I unplugged it for an hour but no change. I will unplug it for a day and see if there is any difference.

i left it unplugged overnight. I plugged it in this morning and, amazingly, it works again. So you are a genius!

Given this is a known problem, it would be helpful if SD 1.) posted this on a FAQ and 2.) if possible, addressed this through a firmware rev.

The symptom suggests the power adapter may be having issues and should be replaced. Our customer support can help - drop an email to support@silicondust.com

The HDHomeRun unit itself does not contain electrolytic or tantalum capacitors (we use more expensive ceramic capacitors) so there are no capacitors that can fail over time.

Power adapters do have a lifespan - spec'd for 98% to be operating within spec after 5 years of continuous use.

nickk, that was my first thought as I usually jump to the issue of power supply but when it first happened to me, I swapped between two units and it stayed on the device, not power supply... I will also state it was as if the issue was on the ethernet port itself based on any leds I could see and unplugging ethernet cable with no change.

I really like the quatros and don't perceive such as a "defect" as I stated it rarely happened again on the same unit (but when it did, it was always either after a firmware upgrade or a very short disconnection of power).

Thanks to both of you! I already opened a support ticket and will also send an email to support.

To echo signcarver's observation about the network interface: When my Quatro was unresponsive, both LEDs were lit on the Ethernet jack. The functioning Quatro only had the left, green LED lit. Now, that the unresponsive Quatro is performing properly, only the left, green LED is lit. That's why I swapped network cables and ports, initially.

Not sure what the orange LED indicates...

I really don't think it is a power adapter issue because...

I swapped the power adapters on my two Quatros.
I had no issues with either Quatro since my 20190603beta1 until I upgraded to Release 20190621.
Then both Quatros were offline again.

I restarted them this morning and both are working now.

Test - try issuing a restart command and see if it comes back:

Windows - open a cmd prompt and run:
"C:\Program Files\Silicondust\HDHomeRun\hdhomerun_config <device id> set /sys/restart self
