Playback issues - inline_phil

Post by inline_phil » Wed May 29, 2019 6:39 am

Add me to the mix of those experiencing stutter and jerking. I have owned the same system [Samsung TV, HDHOMERUN Quattro, NVIDIA Shield, WD EX-4 server] for about a year now. When I first purchased the unit, it had some minor playback issues most noticeable with OTA [fast-motion pixellation]. Now, with zero system changes [and I do mean absolutely ZERO except for the latest firmware upgrades], the jitter from recordings made to the WD NAS is awful, so bad that the sound even drops out coinciding with these glitches.

Live OTA is still glitchy, especially on two channels whose signal strength etc. BTW are quite good [80+ or better]. For example, watching NASCAR or F1 live is a joke and recordings are even worse. However, when the side-by-side screens are displayed, the problem completely disappears from both live and recordings [go figure].

I do not understand why the problem has gotten worse. I can understand others who change gear/settings but that is not my case.

Care to formulate a suggestion?

Please enable the sending of diagnostic data on the HDHomeRun, run a channel scan, and enable the sending of diagnostic data in the app (see viewtopic.php?f=15&t=69066). Then, watch live TV on a problem channel for at least 10 minutes. Reply back with the device ID for your HDHomeRun and we will check the logs.

Pixellation is not bad right now, only two small issues noted [usually occurs during fast motion viewed in a stationary camera]. As I said, watching an auto race is when it's very noticeable [none on right now].

Should I watch a recorded program from my NAS?

Check out the timestamp near local time of 5:55. Watch the top of the screen as the video switches to the story about the baby swan

Are you seeing the issues on all channels or just certain ones? There's a bug in the NVIDIA decoder that is triggered by a few stations that causes video corruption on high-motion areas. It's something you might notice most on sports on fast camera pans, or in car racing when a car moves rapidly across the screen, or on the news when they do graphics wipes and such. If you compare the same scene on the Shield and on any non-NVIDIA device (it also affects the video decoder on some NVIDIA GPUs in PCs, so don't compare to a Win10 PC using an NVIDIA card), do you see the same issues or is it clean on other devices?

Two local HD channels are particularly bad those being 8.1 [NBC] and 13.1 [FOX].

Never watch over anything else other than the system described.

Installed the app and watching now on my MOTO cell phone on channel 8.1.

First impression is that the scene transition [cut to another view] is snappier. Only watched for 2 minutes but glitch free.

Switched to channel 13.1, the one I usually watch auto racing on. Similar results for the few minutes I watched, i.e., glitch free and snappy transitions.

From your questions, it sounds like this is a known NVIDIA issue independent of you folks.

What's the issue and what's the resolution?

The issue is the NVIDIA decoder has a bug with handling certain video streams. Unfortunately there isn't a resolution other than not using an NVIDIA decoder.

I've searched the NVIDIA forum high and low for a discussion on this bug with no luck. Would appreciate any available link you might have that pertains to HDHomeRun users.

8.1 is 1080i and WFLA also has a 720p and 3 480i subchannels. At 6.454 Mbps I'm not surprised that you see pixelation whenever there is fast motion. It's really too low for an HD subchannel.

The station may be using a stat mux, which would improve things. It maintains a pool of available bandwidth and hands it out to subchannels as needed. You can monitor the bit rate with HDHomeRun Config GUI to see if it increases significantly during high motion scenes.
