Resolved with ver. 0723 - New UI - After hours of watching one channel, no slice guide data

Post by leerandall » Tue May 07, 2019 1:15 pm

This has now happened to me 2 days in a row. I keep my Shield tuned to MSNBC with closed captions on all day while I work. When I finish work for the day, I change the channel. Except yesterday and today, when I tried to change channels, the slice guide had no program data. I couldn't change channel either even though the channel numbers were there. To recover both times, I just shut down the app and removed it from the recent apps screen. When I started the app again, the slice guide data was there and I could change channels again.

If you look at discover, is it screwed up too?

Oddly enough, this did not happen again today. If/when it happens again, I'll do as you asked.

I managed to get it to to happen too. It COULD be a server side thing, which would explain why it was happening all of a sudden and then stopped. Regardless, worth keeping an eye on.

When it was happening, I was thinking there might be a memory leak in the app since it took more than 8 hours of running non-stop without changing channels for it to happen.

Though it could be a leak, typically such is one of 2 things. One issue is that the first set of data retrieved is a set for every channel for 4 hours. The other is that the DeviceAuth (key to access the data/dvr rules) typically change every 8 hours. I'm not sure when SD's app decides to recheck those. On a couple of my programs, i was having such intermittent issues that I ended up putting a button a user could press to ensure things were current.

It just happened again, but this time, only about half of the programs were missing from the slice guide. I checked the Discovery page while this was occurring and everything looked fine there.

To me that suggests it is still using the original 4 hours of data and what programs you had listed continued from within that 4 hour mark.

Would your diagnosis be bolstered by the fact that I can fix it by shutting down the app, clearing the app's cache data, then restarting the app?

Yes as it would retrieve the 4 hour block when it starts.

So what is the long-term solution?

Not sure yet. It's somewhat difficult to reproduce this bug, so it's a little hard to see why it happens. We'll definitely try to have it solved before any release.
