With Microsoft killing off wmc and ceton out of the picture there was no reason to develop a six tuner unit. Just keep selling the threes until cablecards eol. Better to spend the resources trying to develop a dvr application and now a streaming service.
They can't buy the parts to keep making the 3-tuner so they have to make a new model. Might as well make it 6 tuners.
Yeah, Id say it was a reactive move when they realized (back in 2017) the three would have to be discontinued soon. I don't think it was or is a high priority given the fact they don't have stock of either now. Provided the supply chain is in place, I don't get why a six tuner should be any more difficult to get to market, ceton did it five years ago . Although I get tired of waiting, I understand the business decision. They stand to make far more money from premium than the shrinking cc user base.

WMC is/was the best Windows DVR interface, but there are others alive and well. Additionally, SD's streaming service is far from satisfying what most cable customers have become accustomed to in terms of number of channels and picture quality.

WMC is not dead it has life till January 2020 and it will still work after that using EPG123 for channel guide data

Other than the addition of 3 more tuners, what will be the difference between the Prime and the Prime 6? Faster processor? More memory? Faster/better channel switching?

Nothing particularly. It really is just 3 more tuners.

It does have a slower Network Interface.

Different processor since the one in the original PRIME doesn't exist anymore and couldn't handle 6 streams anyway. Channel tuning time at the hardware level was already at like half a second and can't get noticeably faster. Any delays are on the client side, mostly buffering and waiting for an I frame, and new hardware can't help either of those.

Thank you Nate and Jason. Is it correct that the network interface is actually slower than the previous model? What would be the reasoning behind that?

Yes, it is 100Mbit. Something to do with the design of the CPU, I'm not entirely sure on the specifics.

That's actually a great question! Nate and Jason - What is the maximum amount of bandwidth that could be needed by 6 concurrent HD streams?

ATSC specifies just under 20Mbps per channel. Extrapolating, this would mean a maximum of just under 120Mbps. Realistically, this will never occur, because when the Prime tunes a channel, it filters out the streams of the other channels carried on that frequency. In my experience an HD cable stream will be about 8Mbps, with peaks for action/sports, so call it 10Mbps.

In practice, 100Mbps should be fine. If you are streaming multiple HD action streams (like several sports channels), then you might saturate the feed for a bit. But realistically it probably won't be a problem.

Apparently FiOS doesn't know about that limit.
