AM/FM Capabilities

Postby shawn_75 » Mon Jan 14, 2019 4:13 pm

Have you or could you consider adding support for tuning / recording AM/FM? This is something that many NTSC tuners had integrated in the past. I actually still use one of those old tuner cards specifically to record two FM shows I wouldn't otherwise be able to listen to.

+1

I doubt the advent of FM/AM would yield any revenue but it would be something I would use.

+1. At first glance my reaction was 'why?', but as we move away from the AV receiver paradigm to streaming and amplifier-based home audio systems, it would be interesting to also receive AM/FM OTA signal and stream through the home network via SD - that way I don't have to listen to crappy, compressed internet radio when I leave my receivers in the dustbin.

NTSC tuners could receive FM because the audio on NTSC channels is nothing but a slightly modified version of FM radio, and it's no great trick to use the adjust the tuning parameters to switch back and forth. The tuning components in the HDHomeRun cannot receive NTSC or FM radio at all, so unfortunately it's not an option. We looked into creating an HD radio product back when that was first starting to appear, but the licensing terms for the technology are specifically designed to prohibit any kind of digital streaming of the broadcast so that was dead after about 15 minutes of looking.
