I have been running Kodi on the Nexus player (Android 7) for my HDHomeRun interface and when is was 16.1, everything was great. The embedded subtitles worked great (requirement).
My NAS is a WD MyCloud 3TB
I have gigabit cables and switch.
Nexus player behaves the same with wirless (5g) or wired.
When Kodi decided to update to version 17 and I have three problems:
1 - video stutters, buffer full indication when watching. When watching a video from NAS, the nexus player CPU usage is around 50% on all cores (Kodi - system information) and I have 250mb memory free. Throughout all of this the video stutters. Audio is good, but no picture.
2 - embedded subtitles are hit and miss. This might be due to number 1, but sometimes I get them, and sometimes I don't.
3 - whenever I change skin interface (what is on the side-bar), when exiting out and going back in, they revert to the original. I'm sure all other settings stick, just not this.
I can watch the same video on my surface Pro 2 using Kodi 17, so this points that the network is fine. When having the video playing on the Nexus player first (stuttering), then starting the same video on Surface Pro 2, the video on that works fine.
I should install HDHomeRun app on nexus player, but since no subtitles, it cannot really be used. This would show if its Kodi or the Nexus player.
Are other people using a similar setup (Nexus Player with 7, Kodi 17)?

I have the same problem in kodi. In the HDhomerun app it works fine. Stutters in the HDhomerun kodi plug-in as well.

Gave up and put 16.1 back on and disabled updates. Works like it should again.

Re: Nexus Player and Kodi 17
Reverting back to 16.1 is exactly what I did this weekend.
Worked a treat.
Subtitles back up, no stuttering.. and most importantly... wife is happy again (she is the one that needs the subtitles).
All you need is ES File Explorer and a microUSB adapter.
Download the 16.1 apk (x86 version) and put on USB drive. Open up ES File Explorer and then install the application (uninstall the other one first).
