ATSC 3.0: Orlando, FL

Post by DougHo »

(I was here back around Halloween but found WRCF had discontinued 3.0 before then.)

June 30th 10am is the official rescan time to again try 3.0 in Orlando, on VHF and UHF. I just tried it early (a little after 11pm June 29th) and got several HEVC programs on UHF 28; 106.1 was the name for WKMG, 135.1 was the name for WOFL, and 165.1 was the name for WRBW. Picture and sound worked on my Windows 10 PC with HDHomeRun from Windows Store. Then it went away by 11:30pm. I'll check again in the morning hoping for both channels and more programs (maybe with traditional numbers). Just thought I'd give an early/initial report. Location is five miles north of the airport (around 16-17 miles WSW of towers).

The HDHomeRun adds 100 to the number of ATSC 3.0 channels so people watching on platforms that don't have the ability to playback AC-4 audio or handle interlaced HEVC can still tune to the ATSC 1.0 channels. On an actual NextGen TV those ATSC 3.0 channels will appear as 6.1, 35.1, 65.1, etc.

I started doing more early re-scans shortly after 9am; WESH 2.1 was on 527MHz (23) and just after that WRBW 65.1 was on 587MHz (33) - no HEVC or 100+. Remained that way through 9:35am when I noticed/updated firmware to 20210624 from 20210422. 9:40am same except new firmware uses Tuner 2 for those channels instead of Tuner 0.

ATSC 1.0 relocations were presumably the priority. I suppose the ATSC 3.0 transmissions will come along later.

Update: Re-scanned around 10:15am and found HEVC 102.1, 106.1, 118.1, 124.1, 135.1, and 165.1; tuner 0 201MHz and 557MHz. All working with video and audio on my Windows 10 HDHomeRun from Windows Store.
Hoping that 109.1 (WFTV-ABC) comes along sometime.

I don't see the record button during viewing like I do on non-HEVC channels; perhaps that has to do with the "guide" which seems blank for those 100+

I'm noticing WUCF looks much darker on 124.1 than it is on 24.1. Also seeing a second or two lag between when the video starts and when the audio starts with the HEVC channels that is not present on the other channels.

I was able to view HEVC channels on Windows HDHR app (after MS Store $1 codec purchase) and they show up in the Silicondust web interface, but, they don’t show up on my LG Oled app channel lineup.

Seams like I can receive ATSC 3.0 channels now, I can view them, but non of them have audio. I tried ffplay, VLC, HDHomeRun. I provided some output what I see:
Whats weird from the start is that the Audio stream is Data ( bin_data ) vs Audio ( ac4 )

Current on Firmware:
Hardware Model HDHR5-4K
Firmware Version 20210624

FFplay output ( ATSC 3.0 channel ):
Input #0, mpegts, from 'http://172.16.12.63:5004/auto/v106.1':0/0
Duration: N/A, start: 77355.502933, bitrate: N/A

Stream #0:0[0x31]: Video: hevc (Main 10) ([36][0][0][0] / 0x0024), yuv420p(tv, bt709), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions, 59.94 fps, 59.94 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
Stream #0:1[0x32]: Data: bin_data (AC-4 / 0x342D4341)

Stream #0:3[0x39]: Data: bin_data (STPP / 0x50505453)

FFplay output ( ATSC 1.0 channel ):
Input #0, mpegts, from 'http://172.16.12.63:5004/auto/v6.1':f=0/0
Duration: N/A, start: 63560.637033, bitrate: N/A
Program 3
Stream #0:0[0x31]: Video: mpeg2video (Main) ([2][0][0][0] / 0x0002), yuv420p(tv, top first), 1920x1080 [SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9], Closed Captions, 29.97 fps, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
Side data:

HDHR5-4K to LGOLED55C8 works (Audio/Video) with the ATSC3.0 broadcasts 102.1, 106.1, 118.1, 124.1, 135.1, 165.1.

However, HDHR5-4K to iPad Pro (9.7-inch) no sound, snapshot video on RF11 channels WESH 102.1, WKCF 118.1 and WDSC 124.1.

Also, Apple TV 4K (A1832 -32 GB) sound ok, snapshot video on RF11 channels as above.

iPhone XR -

WESH Multiplex - WESH, WKCF, and WUCF - Jumpy video, normal audio
WRBW Multiplex - WKMG, WOFL, and WRBW - Normal video, normal audio

Windows 10 PC

Both WESH and WRBW - Normal audio and video

I wonder why WFTV and WRDQ did not launch on WRBW's multiplex?, even after promoting the rescan on their news this morning.

That's because FFmpeg doesn't have any support for AC-4, so it doesn't know that streams tagged as "AC-4" are audio content and instead lists them as random binary data streams.

Some 3rd party software can recognize the "AC-4" tag and at least pass the bitstream to an external AVR or TV capable of decoding AC-4, while VLC just ignores unrecognized binary data entirely.

Program guide data has appeared for the 100+ channels and that allows the red record button to work (and I can playback recording). Android HDHomeRun App works with video and audio. iPadOS HDHomeRun App has no audio. So far I'm satisfied, assuming 109.1 appears sometime.

Which specific iPad models do you have? For Apple support of AC-4 widely varies based on the model and year of the device. In general it's 2018 and newer, but on some years support can vary between models.

I have a 6th gen iPad (model MR7F2LL/A) that won’t play AC-4 audio in the official HDHR app. (My market, Little Rock, AR, also launched ATSC 3.0 today.) However, the free non-DVR Channels for HDHomeRun app does play AC-4 audio on my iPad.

Channels bundles a version of libavformat and libavcodec built with the unofficial AC-4 patches, for various reasons applications like VLC, Plex, Emby, Kodi and others can't do that until the patches are accepted into mainline FFmpeg.
