Size of power connector?

Post by jason0x21 »

I just got one of the new ASTC 3.0 tuners, and with my old tuner, I'd salvaged the power plug from a dead power supply to use with a Power over Ethernet splitter. Since I don't want to hack up the brand new power supply, what are the dimensions of the power plug, so I can continue to use the PoE splitter? I realize that running it off an unauthorized power supply is a warranty busting move. Thanks!

@Nickk Nothing to do about it now, but it would have been better, even preferable to use one of the more standard sizes of barrel jack, such as 3.5 x 1.35mm or 2.1/2.5x5.5mm.

4.0x1.7mm means I have to adapt it for my DC PoE splitter.

Or you could just implement PoE on the board :)

I like to use these: [link removed by moderator] which are 3.5 x 1.35mm

Edit, sorry, didn't realize links to Amazon weren't allowed. If you are looking for one, I've been using these: "PoE Texas 802.3af PoE Splitter with 5 Volts Output" from Wifi Texas.

You'll also need to find an adapter to the barrel jack for this device.

Yea I use those splitters here, haven't found a barrel adapter for this weird size though. Would have been nice to see a more standard size or PoE implemented onboard natively but is what it is.

And I discovered the same thing as Clintos, barrel size isn't compatible with the Connect 4K.

Not to worry though, I solved it with wire cutters, my soldering iron and some heat shrink!

Problem solved.

Be careful with polarity when you do that.

Also I believe the link was removed as SD doesn't want to be responsible for anyone damaging their units from such a post (I'd personally be worried less about damage, provided fixed 5V and not user selectable voltage, and more about quality of power that it actually works but that also is a support nightmare and you don't want to provide too much voltage). I have a bunch of the adapters to convert "old" power supply (2.1mm ID / 5.5mm OD plug) to "new" (1.7mm ID / 4.0mm OD plug) when it comes to the 5V units and there are a few poe adapters that either have the old style connector or adapter for such.

The adapters were easy enough.

First I ordered a pack of "uxcell 15pcs DC Power Connector Adapter 5.5mm x 2.1mm Male Plug to 3.5mm x 1.35mm Female Jack Converter for Laptop CCTV Camera strip lighting Black"

Then I ordered a pack of "aceyoon Laptop DC Power Adapter Kits 38 PCS Universal 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm DC AC Power Adapter Tips Connector for Lenovo Thinkpad Power Supply Plug Jack Set"

That comes with the one you need, and a slew of others that I hope I find useful sometime.

In any case, I have it adapted, and I have more barrel adapters for next time.
