You're right. No one should have to worry about things like audio codecs, but thanks to corporate greed here we are.
Grumbles wrote: Tue Nov 03, 2020 6:58 pm Will I be able to watch tv and hear the audio on my iPad, iMac, lg tv etc?
Probably. Some Apple devices have the AC-4 codec so they should play. LG has ATSC 3.0 tuners in some of their TVs so they should have a AC-4 codec, too, but we don't really know until you try. These kinds of technical details are never printed in manuals or on websites.
Grumbles wrote: Tue Nov 03, 2020 6:58 pm Who is responsible for making sure I can see and hear atsc 3.0 tv? Is this a silicondust issue?
It's not Silicon Dust's fault. It's an industry problem. Dolby went to media content providers and said "hey we'll give you lots of money to use our brand new codec!" and everyone said "SURE!" The ATSC 3.0 spec allows for a wide range of audio codecs. There's nothing in the AC-4 spec that makes it that much superior over other codecs unless you count a minor improvement to compression, but we could have gotten that if they used Opus.

My question is why did the signal stop when the day before yesterday I was getting a beautiful atsc 3.0 picture and sound on all devices? Then yesterday I upgraded all my software and the picture and sound disappeared. Why?

The day before yesterday, the ATSC3 station in DFW was off the air, so you were probably falling back to the ATSC1 stations.

The HEVC channels are off the air this morning. At least I have FOX "back" with the 1.0 channel selectable again.

Even though it was showing ATSC 3.0 as the signal type?

I haven't noticed any ATSC 3.0 drops since it came back on yesterday.
Ran all overnight > Next PVR > LibreElec/Kodi (RPI4)
Of course no audio. But video seems to be smoother (no persistent hiccups) than the HDHomerun app yesterday.
Weird how I always get 2 fails, before it finally streams, takes a few seconds to get going when switching channels.

What are you using for the streaming? TV, iPad, Mac, PC, ? I can't get a video signal on any of my devices.

I have a dedicated Win 10 Next PVR backend recorder. I can TeamViewer into it and get both video and sound from the HDHomerun app.
Win 10 asked me about installing an HVEC codec from the App Store when starting up the HDHomerun app.
Mac both VLC and the HDHomerun app play video, but no sound.
Make sure all the HDHomerun apps and software and firmware are up to date.
Often I get a no start and have to reclick once or twice, but once tuned and playing, it chugs along fine.

Ideal end goal is for the Raspberry Pi's to pull it from the Win 10 Next PVR backend when there is a audio solution.
Not sure how well they will handle 4K resolution down the road, but so far so good.

Interesting that my LG tv has suddenly started showing video and audio from the home run application.

Checking and tuner 1 is showing an atsc 3.0 signal

So what miracle happened?

Signal is good and picture is great

Nothing else works...yet...but as long as it runs on my lg tv I will be happy

Can anyone explain what happened?

And now, today, no picture, no sound on anything.

This must be something the station is doing. If I can get a great picture and sound one day, and nothing the next, then the transmitter process must be the issue.

As will all new technologies, it will get better in 6 months or so.

I just need to be patient.

I'm not having any issues tuning to the ATSC3 station. What do your signal levels look like?

My father is having similar issues in Waxahachie. Either no signal or picture but no sound for HEVC channels (4.1, 49.1, 49.2).

All signal metrics show 100%. Streaming rate is 4.222 Mbps. But the signal is unusable.

Issue started yesterday around 17:30 local time, but before that was fine.

Any suggestions welcome.
