ATSC 3.0: Salt Lake City

Post by timeshifter »

Received and setup my Connect 4K (non-dev) today. Even though SLC went live with ATSC 3.0 on July 1st ( https://www.atsc.org/news/nextgen-tv-co ... lake-city/ ), no ATSC 3.0 channels were detected when I scanned. The one thing I should mention is I do live in an area with poor reception (sig quality is typically around 50% for most channels). But, I do receive all of the stations that are supposed to be broadcasting ATSC 3.0. I did notice the tuners on the Connect 4k are slightly better than my Extend, which is great.

An update. I did a scan using the command line tools. As @flying4fun mentioned in the main topic, 4 ATSC 3.0 channels are found. But, I can't connect to them. Not running at full power yet? Not sure if I can rely on the lock stats. I hope those are correct, since my signal quality is typically around 50. ASTC 3.0 is supposed to be easier to receive.

LOCK: atsc3 (ss=90 snq=100 seq=100)
PROGRAM 5001: 14.1 KJZZ
PROGRAM 5002: 30.1 KUCW (no data)
PROGRAM 5003: 2.1 KUTV (no data)
PROGRAM 5004: 4.1 KTVX (no data)

Update: Using the HDHomeRun config app, when I manually tune to the channels listed above, and check both PLPs, the "(no data)" goes away.

One more update. Booted up Windows in VMWare (I'm a Mac user) and installed the HDHomeRun app. Opened up HDHomeRun config and was able to manually tune to one of the ATSC 3.0 channels. I'm just not sure how to view it. When I click the View button, some Windows media player opens and fails to show anything.

Btw., there are 2 PLPs.

0: mod=qam16 cod=9/15 bond=0 layer=core ti=hti lls=1 lock=1 errs=0
1: mod=qam256 cod=11/15 bond=0 layer=core ti=hti lls=0

Update: I installed VLC, which now opens when I click the View button. But, still no video/audio.

Seeing similar:

Can see the atsc3 stuff in config gui if I manually tune to it, but they don't show up anywhere else.

us-bcast: 19
5001: 14.1 KJZZ
5002: 30.1 KUCW (no data)
5003: 2.1 KUTV (no data)
5004: 4.1 KTVX (no data)

Physical Channel: atsc3:19
Signal Strength % -73dBm (yellow)
Signal Quality % 31.7dB (green)
Symbol Quality % 100% (green)

In the Web interface, I get:

Virtual Channel none
Frequency 503.000 MHz
Program Number none
Modulation Lock atsc3
Signal Strength 61%
Signal Quality 100%
Symbol Quality 100%
Streaming Rate none
Resource Lock none

Hitting view in the config gui brings up windows media player, but not displaying anything, and the config gui switches to channel 0 after a couple seconds.

Using firmware 20201015

That's pretty much the exact same behavior seen in other markets, such as Pittsburgh. Not sure if it's the broadcaster not broadcasting to specs, or SD not fully implementing the specs. Either way, I think this is going to take some time to resolve...

yeah, I saw the Portland (I think) thread, where they apparently fixed the issue, so I wanted to note that it was still not working here.

However, with firmware 20201017a, its now working, sort of.

They still don't show up in the channel list after scanning, but tuning manually and hitting "view":

the frame rate is low (between 5 and 1 fps, estimated), and lots of artifacts. 3 of the channels play back with an incorrect 3.5:1 aspect ratio, the 4th channel plays back at the correct aspect ratio, but still the artifacts and low frame rate. The symbol quality is claimed to be 100% on all four.

The channel with the correct aspect ratio (5004) (which is playing while I type this) has stopped having artifacts, but is only playing about 1 frame very 2 seconds.

The config gui says the network rate is around 6.8mbps.

I've turned on send diagnostic information, 10802513

3 of the 4 channels are (no data) unless I check plp 1. the remaining channel (5001) seems to work (with the above problems) no matter what combination of plp is checked or unchecked. (this is not the channel with the correct aspect ratio).

I did the same thing after installing the 20201017a firmware, and I'm seeing the same results.

Can you please try installing the new 20201018 firmware and running a channel scan from the device webpage.

The old hdhomerun_config scan approach doesn't tune PLPs and won't find all ATSC 3.0 channels.

I installed 20201018. I'm not seeing anything different in the behavior of the channel scan from the device webpage than I saw with 20201017a. During the scan 14.1 KJZZ HEVC appears in the channel lineup. Then disappears after the channel scan completes. None of the other three (no data) channels in the list above appear at any point in the lineup during the channel sca..

When I check in the Config GUI app, the two PLPs appear to lock, but now stay red when selected. This wasn't the case before.

Just a couple of side notes. Looking at the media info in VLC, KJZZ, KUCW and KUTV all show a resolution of 1920x540 (because it's interlaced?). KTVX has a resolution of 1280x720. And, as is already known, no audio is being decoded.

I'm far from a VLC or HDHomeRun expert. I did figure out one way to watch the one atsc3 channel that works using VLC on my Mac (without having to check both PLPs in the config app). Open Network > http://<device IP address>:5004/tuner0/ch19-5001. I don't suppose anyone knows how to add the PLP options to the URL so I can watch the other channels? Anyway, watching with VLC on my Mac instead of on Windows via VMWare, the video is pretty smooth. Still no audio of course.

ch19p1 or ch19p0p1 if you want both PLPs and the interleaving mode supports it (some stations use CTI which only supports a single PLP being locked at once).

Well, looks like the next firmware update is taking a little more time than the daily releases we had for a while. I think many locations are experiencing similar issues. Here's a summary of what I'm seeing in SLC.

Four ATSC 3.0 virtual channels are available on the same physical channel (19), with two PLPs.

LOCK: atsc3 (ss=90 snq=100 seq=100)
PROGRAM 5001: 14.1 KJZZ
PROGRAM 5002: 30.1 KUCW (no data)
PROGRAM 5003: 2.1 KUTV (no data)
PROGRAM 5004: 4.1 KTVX (no data)

0: mod=qam16 cod=9/15 bond=0 layer=core ti=hti lls=1 lock=1 errs=0
1: mod=qam256 cod=11/15 bond=0 layer=core ti=hti lls=0

1. Scanning using the device webpage finds one of the channels listed above, 14.1 KJZZ HEVC. But, it disappears from the list when the scan finishes.
2. Using the config GUI I can tune to ch19 and view (in VLC) 14.1 KJZZ without checking either of the PLPs shown. Checking both PLPs allows me to view the other three channels.
3. There is no audio.
4. When viewing the first three channels in the list, their resolution is 1920x540 (KTVX is 1280x720). I'm guessing this is because they are 1080i? But, I'm not sure if that's normal for VLC, or if there's an issue with the way the signal is being broadcast or tuned?

Hopefully, the next firmware version will provide fixes that will allow for viewing these channels in the HDHomeRun and Channels apps. Then I can see if I get audio in Channels with the latest server beta, as has been mentioned in other threads.

Keep up the good work SD crew!

Just installed 20201021. I did a channel scan using the device webpage. 14.1 KJZZ HEVC is found, and now stays in the lineup. But, when I try to view it with either the HDHomeRun or Channels app, I get no video or sound. But, I can still stream with VLC.
