Latest/best way to configure Plex

Postby 3rob3 » Tue Jan 22, 2019 10:54 am

Planning on moving my Plex server from Windows to Synology box, and wondering what the most up to date way to configure guide for Plex is. Currently using epg123/schedules direct method, but would like to remove Windows from the mix. Any other better ways? Only other way I know is to tell Plex you have cable, and manually map each channel to the cable equivalent. This would still have the time zone issue though, correct? I'm on EST.

It's a mess. I was in the exact same boat as you. I threw my hands up in the air and decided to try Jellyfin and haven't looked back since. Much easier than Plex.

I know that's not what you're asking but that was my solution.

Jump Ship to Emby, they can load multiple EPGs and have a current lineup for PTV, OTA, Cable, and other streaming

To be clear, Jellyfin is an OSS fork of Emby so same functionality as what @rrussis82 mentioned minus the cost of Emby Premiere subscription for live tv.

The best way to configure Plex is to uninstall and switch to Emby.

I just can't bring myself to do it (yet). I have both installed. Plex veterans typically hang on for dear life in the (perhaps misguided) hope that one day Plex will come to their senses.

Still, magnum annoyances aside, we still prefer Plex (with the full knowledge this probably won't end well) at this AO.

It's difficult to trade that classic in on a new one, even though you're working on it more than you're driving it.

Bummer, tried Emby many times and greatly prefer Plex. I'd use Channels DVR before Emby. Don't want this to turn into an Emby vs Plex thread though. Guess I am mostly out of luck.

Us too. There soon could be a straw that exceeds the load rating (dangerously close to failure), but for the time being... it's Plex (and the work-arounds).

I see that Emby just did their big new release. Any feedback about it from longtime Plex users? Any hope that it's a viable alternative?

Thanks. I haven't heard of that one.

I just tried Emby premiere for a month since plex will not stream live tv from my HDHome run to a chromecast. I gotta switch back to plex though. There are things i like about emby better. Streaming to a chromecast is a definate plus and i like i can skin and change its interface, but no app on a playstation makes it less usable for wife and kids, and no food tv means no switching to hd premiere for now. So my plans to switch everything over are on hold till thats all straightened out, and it looks to be taking its time, will just use plex for now. I was using the latest Emby(4.1.0.1-beta). I like some of their changes but the cons, feeling bugy and unstable(maybe cause its beta) and forced to use a browser on PS4, are keeping me on plex.
