Premium TV PAT packets

Postby emveepee » Mon Nov 26, 2018 1:26 pm

I noticed that the PAT packets on the demo premium channels come in very infrequently perhaps every 5000 packets or more and it doesn't seem to be 2 per second. This is very unusual based on standard broadcast files I have seen. Is this by design or is there still configuration being calculated?

Thanks,

Martin

Is there any update on this. If anything it is worse today I was testing capturing one station today, and the PAT was being sent every 15 seconds which is awful for live tv.

Testing is complete. The change is scheduled to go live in the morning (off peak).

Thanks as of 8:30 Eastern it is still not working here, I will check later and update the post. The barker demo sends out the packets at a reasonable interval.

Hi Nick, I also ran into a problem with the Premium TV PAT packets and just wanted to confirm that what I found is both accurate and was expected.

What tripped me up was that after a few seconds (10-12 PID 0x000 packets) the PAT packets were indicating that there was a payload present but all bytes after the headers were set to 0xFF:

Code: Select all

47 00 00 1C FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF FF

The MPEG-TS specification I was working from didn't allow for a PSI table ID of 0xFF so my code went rogue looking for all kinds of sections that don't exist and blew up. Wikipedia's documentation for PSI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Program-s ... nformation) noted the 0xFF was valid here and it was expected that the remainder of the packet would contain 0xFF stuffing bytes in that case.

This was clearly a bug/oversight/education issue on my part but I wanted to make sure that you guys knew the PAT packets were often coming in as nothing but stuffing bytes via Premium TV and that is the expected behavior.

Confirming, you can get all-FF frames on the PAT and PMT PIDs when the system needs to pad. The frames do not have the Payload Unit Start flag set so they should be treated the same as trailing FF padding.
