Stage 2?

Postby Sammy2 » Thu Sep 20, 2018 12:42 pm

Stage 2 is to get things where we want them to be...

Video = High Quality HEVC 720p 60fps.
Audio = 5.1 channel (for channels broadcast in surround sound).
Second audio track available (for channels broadcast with a second audio track).
So how's it coming along?

BTW, YTTV has gone to 1080p60 on a lot of channels now. I think SiliconDust should too and move to h.265 HEVC!

Can we get an update?

I think Stage 2 is being held hostage by Stage 1 'Demo Channels Surprise' bug. Apparently it's gonna take more than a rolled up newspaper to deal with that one.

My renewal just hit. Suppose I should check into that and see if I got it too.

Things here are, uh, Not Fine. They were Not Fine day before yesterday, then became Fine long enough to access my credit card for more money, then went total Not Fine, after that.

The two are unrelated items. We're working to correct the demo channel issue right now.

Regarding stage 2, right now we're looking at sample files from upstream in all available formats including 1080i, 720p, and whatever format ESPN classic is and running tests to see what conversion settings will look best on them.

Hmm, how about take the best format they have regardless of resolution and use that as a base. Doesn't matter if it's interlace or not as you can deinterlace it properly.

Setup conversion of feed to H.265 and use 60 fps for HD content. You shouldn't care what the source feed format are if in spec and just use the one from each channel that has the highest temporal resolution as everything transcoded will be based on that.

That means if given a choice of using a 1080i/30 feed vs a 720p/60 feed you would use the 1080i/30 feed as it has the highest temporal resolution.

If you get 1080 but it's normally 720 broadcast don't worry about trying to match what others provide. Just provide the best feed possible of each channel in progressive format with proper deinterlacing and you will be set.

Obviously the feed sent to end users needs to be in proper spec as well so you don't run into the same issues again.

Personal anecdotal experience: The best technique for ESPN Classic is to do a bob deinterlace, and make it 4:3 480p60 with AAC stereo. Since the source quality is just dreadful (Seriously, ESPN, c'mon!), HEVC will struggle a little harder with the "dirty" video. It means it needs a higher average bit rate for a set quality than you'd expect for a 480p video.

No matter what you do, it will unfortunately not look great.

Agree on ESPN Classic. It's the odd ball channel in the lineup as it's a dedicated SD. It will take a slightly different approach but for the most part will be done just like 1080i content as far as deinterlacing and frame rate is concerned.

Any way to get an ETA on when this might be rolled out? Are we looking at another week or two?

Ditto. Would be nice to know whether S2 was two weeks or two months out.

I was never hit by the Demo Bug. I wonder if it is an east coast feed thing?

At any rate, it would be nice if @nateb or @nickk could give us an inkling of were things are with Stage 2.

Nothing really interesting to post since Thursday. And I believe I've mentioned this before, but because we're talking about housing hardware in somebody else's server, being able to give any kind of reasonable time commitment is almost impossible. Too many moving parts. When something new happens, I'll post here.

Agreed. I'm not going to shoot the messenger because I appreciate the honesty. Product launches are difficult & stuff happens. There were earlier improvements that were *great*, but I also thought we were just a few of weeks out from seeing S2. Disappointing news for sure. Amazing concept, just needs to look better than bandwidth-starved 480p.

Guess I'll just leave my subscription set to cancel when it expires next week. It's been a fun month of beta testing. ;) Be sure to keep those demo channels! If the quality ever meets (or exceeds!) the level of other OTT providers, I will definitely be back!
