Re: Synology SPK for DVR Record Engine

What if I have mcebuddy removing commercials? It edits out the commercials and recreates the .mpg file. The name stays the same though but the runtimes would be different at that point. I only have issues after upgrading so I'm not sure if it's causing a problem or not.

very possible if it is changing the owner of the file

Basically if everything is running right, the hdhomerun record engine should be running as hdhomerundvr user.
So it has access to any file that is owned by hdhomerundvr
if that user changes - then it will fall to group.. which should also be hdhomerundvr
so if user is wrong and group is users - then hdhomerundvr may not be able to access the files - depends on the next grouping of permissions.
but the obvious thing is to make sure hdhomerundvr is owning the files.

that makes sense, as I do log in as "super" to do the commercial removal. I'll change it and maybe it'll at least help with future. Oh it's hdhomerundvr:http not "users: group like I had thought.

Here's the .txt output for ls -l

I did it on both the HDHomeRun directory as well as my biggest recorded show. I do notice the record engine does have different permissions, but owner is still the same

login as: super
super@192.168.1.87's password:

Re: Synology SPK for DVR Record Engine

Post by jayleekay »

Just a note. The two new recordings were showing up in Kodi until I changed owner to hdhomerundvr:http
Now they're not showing. I'm going to play around with ownership and change it all to Super:users to see what happens.

*edit: that didn't work either. I still only have 2 recordings showing for that show.

S01E30
S01E104 <- the older file. there's a duplicate of this episode.

Thanks for the info..

To start off with - the engine is downloaded and is got the right permissions

Code: Select all

-rwxr-x--- 1 hdhomerundvr http 1511165 Sep 7 18:53 hdhomerun_record
And is producing valid logs

Code: Select all

-rwxrwxrwx 1 hdhomerundvr http 177132 Sep 10 18:58 20200910.log
-rwxrwxrwx+ 1 hdhomerundvr http 158060 Sep 11 17:49 20200911.log
And it looks like your recording folders all have the right permissions, e.g.

Code: Select all

drwxrwxrwx 2 hdhomerundvr http 12288 Sep 11 17:49 It Takes a Killer
If you look in the logfile for when the engine scans the directories - what is it saying about how many recordings are in the folder?
You may need to stop and start the engine.. you're looking for a line sort of like this.. but with actual subdirs or recordings

Code: Select all

20200827-00:00:31 Recorded: directory /volume1/HDHomeRunDVR/ with 0 subdirs and 0 recordings
So the next thing is to look into the recordings subdir/folder.
Everything looks ok.. even though these are marked as owned by Super the last rwx means anyone can read or access to them

Code: Select all

So here's my suspicion..
Your mcebuddy is not configured right.. am betting it's not re-inserting the header section with all the meta data the record engine has.
Its pure co-incidence that the record engine suddenly stopped serving you the recordings.

I could be wrong - but I don't see anything else.. You'll need to look in to one of those logs.. Tip is to stop the engine and remove them all, the start and get a fresh log which should show all that it's doing.

Thanks for your help! I think you're right and it's something to do with the commercial removal program. I'll tinker with it.

For anyone else who happens to be missing recordings and use MCEBuddy, make sure your conversion profile has the option for "Add Information" .

Apparently by default the software strips the metadata. Selecting this option re-adds it. So I'm in the process of reprocessing all of my recordings and as they process they're showing up in the recordings again.

So going forward, I shouldn't lose my recordings after an upgrade!

Looking for anyone to help on this slight problem.

Whenever my Synology NAS loses power, whether by power outage or unplugged, and the NAS then starts back on when power is restored, my HDHomeRunDVR engines does not restart, yet when I go into the DiskStation Manager (DSM) it shows the engine as running. To get it to actually work, I have to stop then start the engine. However, if I do a proper restart or proper shutdown then startup, the HDHomeRun DVR engine runs. This started sometime earlier this year since.

Has anyone encountered anything like this? Or has a solution?

Thanks in advance.

Is pretty simple..
When your NAS loses power like that it doesn't cleanly unmount the disks
Then when you power back up it doesn't mount them blindly - it does a check of the disks, and that can delay making them available to the system.

Now to the script.
On starting the NAS it tries to execute the startup script for the record engine, however it has no filesystem to download and save the engine binary and thus fails to start.
as to why the DSM shows engine running I need to check and see why the start script doesn't fail

Ok, thanks for the explanation. Wished it would run on startup like the other packages installed. These last 2 weeks have had to go in several times to restart the engine (thanks to Sally).

If that's happening a lot I would recommend strongly to put your NAS on a UPS, particularly one that has a USB connection for the NAS to monitor.
Then if the power goes out, the NAS can shutdown properly saving the disks and any data you have on it.
I use https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DBAA696
You don't need to get the large one.. depending on NAS even the 450VA should give enough time for it to power down correctly and then it should restart properly.

If you want to just hack it - you can modify the start/stop script to NOT download the engine. Thus if the NAS is at least allowing the disks to be mounted in read mode it will still load previous version

If you want to try - script is /var/packages/HDHomeRunDVR/scripts/common
Find the function start_engine() on line 216 and comment out line 220 (place a # at the start of the line)

Code: Select all

216  start_engine() {
217    echo "$LogPrefix ==========================="  >> $hdhr_log
218 echo "$LogPrefix Starting Engine: $currentTS" >> $hdhr_log
219 validate_config_file
220 update_engine
becomes

Code: Select all

216  start_engine() {
217    echo "$LogPrefix ==========================="  >> $hdhr_log
218 echo "$LogPrefix Starting Engine: $currentTS" >> $hdhr_log
219 validate_config_file
220 # update_engine
Next time the binaries won't be updated..
so make sure you have a record engine downloaded in RecordPath
And if you need to update in future you need to 'uncomment' (remove the #) that line again

I'll add something to 'skip_update' to the config file for future.. is a useful thing to have.
But definitely look at a good UPS

Thanks Rik, for the script tweak. I'll give it a try. I was contemplating on getting a UPS, among other emergency equipment good to have during extensive blackouts. Thanks too for advising to look for USB monitoring capabilities.

Hi,

Hoping for some suggestions. Recently got the Synology DS1520+ which has 4 cores, 8gb ram, 5 4tb seagate ironwolf drives in raid 5, and a 256gb m2 drive as cache, and have 2 of the 4 available nics bonded for a 2gb connection to my lan. Installed the synology spk and all worked fine, or so I thought. I had previously been using a windows 10 sff pc as the recording engine and dvr storage without issue. I powered off the pc when I installed the synology recording engine. Went to watch some recordings and they would play verry choppy, skip around a lot, basically unwatchable. This is the only thing installed on the nas currently beyond what comes preinstalled by default.

I definitely don't think this has anything to do with the recording engine, more likely the nas and or storage configuration. Just don't know what to look at or change. Would have thought this nas would have been powerful enough to run the recording engine and dvr storage but perhaps not.

In the meantime, I will go back to the pc but was hoping someone here may have a suggestion to get this working a bit smoother.

Thanks for any help or suggestions,

Steve

The main difference between yours and mine is the bonded NICs.

have you tried without bonding the NICs?
could be your switch that the NAS is connected to?
or maybe some other device on the switch drowning out the NAS packets

Try pull recording over to PC and watch it with VLC to confirm is not the recording..
If you see issues with recording..
Could be same as above but now path to the tuner needs to be checked.

Thanks demonrik.

I tested the files as you suggested and they are much more watchable on the pc with VLC.

I believe you may be right about the bonding. The router is the GT AC5300 with 2 ports dedicated to bonding and set to source bonding (whatever that means as I cant find much detail about it) and the 2 ports on the nas set to Balance XOR. May disable bonding and test or change the various bonding settings.

Things seem a bit better with the current bonding settings so I will continue to test recordings on the nas and post anything new I learn.

Thanks again for the suggestions and keep up the great work.

**UPDATE**

Was definitely the bonding, and while I learned a lot about bonding and the specific settings in the past day, I definitely don't need it and with just the one nic serves fine.
