DVR/Plackback/HD issues

Post by jbahlman@gmail.com »

I have had 2 Primes and 2 record processes running with 2 different hds for awhile with minimal issues.
I have had the Olympics set to dvr all the channels and all was good until last night. I clicked on a show and it just stopped. The same went for a few others. It was late, so i had to wait until i got home tonight.
I looked at the logs files and i see some that say "existing file state = failed", some say "existing file state = data.
Later, i see " Filesystem: wasync excessive lag repeated a couple of times.
Then i see, 20210802-01:00:30 Recording: stop A Discovery of Witches S02E07 20210219 [20210802-0000] (result = 0x0044)"
There are 2 listings for this show one plays for 0 seconds and the other for 20 seconds.

During this time i was able to play stuff that had recorded earlier in the day.
I thought maybe my WDMYcloud HD was starting to fail, so i sshed to it and stopped the hdhomerun record process and i ran a disk check, it found no issues.

While this was going on, i was unable to the the hdhomerun app on my shield to load any of the shows that were on my second hd. It was just stuck on loading. I tried force closing the App but it still didn't work.
When i rebooted the "problem" drive, the app started working. I didn't expect the shows for that record process to show up, but i would expect it to show and work for the shows on that HD.
Also i was able to set something to record, but i was unable to play it back until i rebooted the other hd.

My Primes are 13267ED9 and 13263ED4. The SW for record and primes are 3/3/21 beta1. The shield is running the latest app. i turned on the send diagnostic info on the shield when i started having issues, so hopefully something shows up.

The stuff that should have recording this evening didn't restart until the "problem" hd came back up with the record running. Maybe that is how it is supposed to work since it started recording on that drive??

I would appreciate any help.

It looks like one of your drives might be having problems and/or the interface was reset by the OS.

The log shows the drive keeping up with writes fine. Then suddenly it logged some write errors and excessive lag errors.

Bad sectors will cause the drive to stall for a while causing lag errors and possibly write errors.

Another possibility is the drive stopped responding to commands and the interface was reset by the OS. This stops all reads and writes for a while.

Thanks,
I will keep an eye on the drive, but it seems to be working normal after the reboot.

Any idea why the shield had issues loading the shows on the other HD when i had the record stopped on the main HD?

I might be seing the start of this issue again.

Last night the baseball game failed to play back correctly. It seems like it only recorded about 15 minutes of it.
I see this in the log:

20210908-04:15:30 Recording: event MLB Baseball - Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves 20210907 [20210907-2315] existing file state = failed

20210908-04:30:00 Recording: current time = Wed Sep 8 04:30:00 2021 (correction of -2s)
20210908-04:30:00 Recording: stop MLB Baseball - Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves 20210907 [20210907-2315] (result = 0x0040)
20210908-04:30:00 Recording: failed to write metadata for MLB Baseball - Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves 20210907 [20210907-2315]
20210908-04:30:00 Recording: event MLB Baseball - Washington Nationals at Atlanta Braves 20210907 [20210907-2315] already ended

But tonight the game again failed to finish recording. It recorded over an hour but i see the existing file state failed again.
I looked at the logs and other stuff recorded fine and i was able to play them back.

Any ideas? I have send diagnostic info turned on.

The NAS DVR was doing good but then suddenly had a hard time writing data to the drive, causing it to stall out. Same as what Nick mentioned before. I wonder if there was some process on the NAS that was causing this, like some kind of maintenance task, or another app/user accessing data, that suddenly caused a bottleneck.

Looks like tonight all my recordings have failed with this issue. I have rebooted the drive and it came back up good again. I guess the drive must be failing.

One question i have is do you have any plans to have notifications for failed recordings in the app? That would make this type of stuff easier to catch.

Thanks.

Better notifications/reporting of things like that are on the radar.
