Another $30 Android TV box

It is $29.99 on Walmart.com (add a $5 filler to get the free shipping). Wonder if anyone already have one. Just ordered one and it will arrive in a few days. Based on the review, it is Google Certified running Android TV 10 (same version as Chromecast with Google TV without the Google TV launcher). So, in theory, it should work with HDHR app w/ DRM support. What's unknown is that will this one come with the broken MPEG2 decoders like many other AMLogic based boxes do.

It's cute, and I'm very tempted to buy one just to see if it will run the HDHR DVR (would need USB OTG adapter that can provide power, plus a hub for the USB drive and for an ethernet adapter) and to see if it actually supports ATMOS or not (conflicting reports in early reviews/spec sheets so far), but I've already got more Android TV devices than TVs.. Ah, who am I kidding, I'll probably buy it anyways.

I got mine today. The View app works. There is no volume icon in the app and the volume controls on the remote do not work in the app. I only had 5 or so minutes to test drive it.

Edit:
I'll add that I don't have anything 'extra' hooked up to this TV. It's just into the TV HDMI port using the TV speakers. It does have sound.

On all the Android TVs I have used, volume control buttons on the remote are meant to control TV volumes via either IR or CEC. They are not part of Android TV buttons.

The remote volume buttons control the device's volume when not in the app.

I think that is a mistake for controlling the device volume in an Android TV box. Google clearly doesn't want the device volume controlled this way. Both Chromecast with Google TV and nVidia Shield only allow remote volume buttons to control TV volume. Same with my Verizon Stream TV but it does it half the way (you see a volume slide briefly show up when you wake it up and you can control the device volume via Google Home app but not via remote buttons).

Besides, for better sound quality, it is better to control volume at the device where speakers are located. And if you want to bitstream DD audio, you can't control the volume on device anyway.

Does it have trouble with certain MPEG2 channels? Does it support DRM channel playback?

Nvidia Shield will allow for in-Android volume control. There's a setting for it.

This did not work for me. I get a bubble popup saying the device is set to surround sound and to use the tv volume. I also get a window that says, in poor english, volume passthrough not work.

All my channels are MPEG2 and they all work just fine. I cannot test DRM.

Turn off the surround sound setting and you should be able to control the volume. That's the only way. You can't control volume if you also sending out DD audio from HDHR app.
