Latest Version of Windows 10 app broke 4K TV

Post by foxbat121 »

I'm on Verizon FIOS and it has two 4K channels doing sports all the time lately. Anyway, this morning, after I upgraded to the latest Windows 10 app (app version 20201025), I can no longer watch recordings of those 4K events (and I assume live TV will be the same). It is basically a slide show. Happens on both my desktop (with nVidia GT1030) and laptop (with Intel IGP). It works fine last night when I watched World Series games. So, I'm pretty sure it is the latest app update broke it.

Android TV app on Google TV works fine (version 20201022).

Please upgrade to 20201023 - that should fix it.

I'm confused, currently the app version displayed inside Win10 App is 20201025. In Windows Store it lists version 1.1.299.0. There is no other updates available.

Now I also found that the similar thing happened to Android App on my Google Pixel 3 running Android 11. There are also a lot of screen flashes and other artifacts when playing back the 4K recordings. No problem on my Samsung Tab S5. Nor any problem on my Chromecast with Google TV.

I'm not sure if the problem with Pixel 3 w/ Android 11 occurs before the app update or after the app update because I didn't watch on my phone recently.

20201025 should be the version that fixes things on Windows, but your issue might be something different than the issue that we were thinking of. Android should be updated any day now, as soon as Google approves the update on Google Play.

Can we have you enable app diagnostics on Windows?

Hi NedS,

Just turned it on and played a few minutes of recorded 4K Football (on Win10 and Pixel 3 phone). I saw the update notes mentioned about fix for ATSC 3.0 playback. Mine is FIOS 4K which could be different. It works fine before this latest update.

The Android app is already at version 20201026. It stutters badly just like Win10 app but it also has screen brightness fluctuation or screen flashes every second or so.

I download and upgraded everything to the latest 1028 release. Windows app now reports 20201029 and DVR updated to 1028.

Live TV w/ 4K channel works fine. Looking at the network traffic and it is a consistent 23mbps stream.
Play recorded 4K shows, still as before. Any fast movement on screen is still extremely jerky. Slow movement is OK. But for sports event, anytime someone runs around, it is very sluggish and jump around. Looking at the network traffic, it does up and down constantly. It almost seems like the Win app isn't buffering enough content for feeding the video playback chain. Both DVR and PC are on gigabit wired connect. Also, the playback stopped a few times by itself (like crashed somehow) and when play that same recording, it plays from beginning instead of continue where it left off.

Android TV playback of recorded 4K show has the similar network pattern but there is no movement issue on Android TV box. Also noticed sudden stop of playback randomly. Seems the DVR itself is not stable enough.

Are your 4K channels DRM-restricted? If not, Nick and Gareth would like to get a sample recording to play with.

I still have the Super Bowl halftime show that I recorded on Fios 4K back in February if you want another sample. It has a lot of complex images with fast motion so I thought it would be a good test clip to keep around in case I get a 4K display some day.

Quick test - plays fine on my Windows 10 system.

Possibly a driver update for your GPU causing a problem?

My main system runs nVidia GT1030. The laptop is intel. Both have this problem. Also live 4K works fine. It is just playback of recorded is the problem. Based on network chart in system resource monitor, it seems when playback recorded show, it burst to download a big chunk of data (high network transfer rate) then idle for a while and repeat again. When playing live TV, the network transfer is a constant stream of 23mbps.
Both are connected to 4K TVs running at 2160p@60Hz
