Uninstall/reinstall HD app android box wipes recordings

Post by 3579mike777 » Fri Mar 20, 2020 9:31 am

I was having some trouble with the HD Record add on my android box, so I did what I usually do, uninstall and reinstall the app. It wiped all my previous recordings. Pissed.

I guess I learned my lesson for this buggy DVR software. If I would have known this in advance, I would have shut down the box and storage drive, plug the drive into my Windows 10 computer (I formatted to exFat) and copy the files before uninstalling the stupid fucking app.

What is interesting is that uninstalling and reinstalling the app wiped all of my recordings, but it didn't wipe out my season passes and future DVR recordings.

It is in the directions for installing the dvr engine on android...
WARNING: Android will automatically delete your recordings if you uninstall the HDHomeRun app. This is an Android OS limitation and not under the control of Silicondust.
This also applies to if one clears data (cache should be ok). It is never expected one to uninstall on android when it updates. In theory if you pulled the drive prior to uninstalling, it would not wipe those out and will be accessible again when you plug it back in and configure the DVR engine to run on the device. Personally I would never recommend using an android device for running an engine (at least until it is separated from the client... which is what I had hoped they would do and thus possibly also bring support to the newer single bay My Clouds (home))

Rules are in the cloud and are accessed using the DeviceAuth from your tuner(s).

It drives us nuts as well.

Android locks down access to hard drives such that the only way to use an attached drive is via app-storage. App storage has the quirk that is is deleted if the app is uninstalled.

There is a concept of media storage but that doesn't do what we need if you add a drive or remove a drive after recordings have been made.

Way back when Google first introduced this security policy we followed their recommendation and used app-storage.

It is probably time we circled back to Google to highlight the problems it causes customers to see if they have a newer solution.

The best option is a HDHomeRun SERVIO - storage that just works.
