will hdhomerun dvr ever be not beta

Post by viddect » Wed Feb 12, 2020 7:26 pm

i see in all the downloads we are still in beta after 3+ years since the kickstarter. Will a full release ever happen or will we as customers continue to run beta software?

It has been "out" of beta for many years but it is always expected for one to be on latest engine which is typically a beta as there are multiple betas between releases.

Only if there is DRM recording support. Otherwise, it is not feature complete and hence forever beta.

Part of the kick-starter deal was free DVR service while the project was being developed then free year once complete. If that first year clock hasn't started yet, then I would say we're still in beta. Maybe I'm wrong.

The ks stated it should include drm recording (most likely include... and yes "sales pitches" would make such sound more definate but it was always a risk of the project)... but that is the reason the year had not started yet (at one time they were going to start that year for most and only put such on hold for those that primarily had drm channels but then decided to extend such for all). The ability to record drm protected channels is separate from being beta or not.

Also, "Beta" would imply that there was something to test ;)

I think there's some splitting of hairs about what is defined as beta or stable here. We consider the current feature set (which covers some cable TV users and all OTA users) to be stable software. For cable TV users who have DRM-restricted channels, our DVR software is incomplete, and we are hard at work to resolve that. For everyone else, the code is stable.

I am a Spectrum customer who eagerly awaits the DRM capability. I am wasting lots of money keeping a Spectrum DVR in place just so I can record SyFy and BBC America channels.

If there is a list of Alpha testers for the DRM capabilities, I would be happy to volunteer.
