@NedS What information do you need for troubleshooting Mi Box and DRM channels? I'll gladly send it over.

I believe we have everything we need for now. The developers will see if we can do a work-around, so that people don't have to wait for Xiamoi to update the firmware.

We were able to confirm the specifics of the problem... short version is the Mi Box S codec is failing to handle something which is pretty normal in broadcast TV. This is a regression from the previous Mi Box S software.

The fix is to avoid using this broken codec and instead have our app use a mix of CPU decode with GPU acceleration.

A new build of our app is in internal testing now.

Can confirm here that this is a problem as described - 1080i broadcasts, regardless of app used, result in blockiness/choppiness on the MiBox S. Problem not present on any other Android devices (Pixel 2 XL, Fire TV Stick). Clearly not anything SiliconDust has done; Xiaomi needs to fix this - but SiliconDust's weight behind the request might help ease this along.

The latest HDHomeRun app bypasses the problem codec on MiBoxS running Android 9:

This will be published in the Play Store as an auto-update next week.

Just installed this new patch and have mixed results:

Cable channels all look fine.
OTA channels are still choppy.

The same OTA channel viewed on the corresponding cable channel through the Prime appears fine but the OTA signal through a Connect is choppy.

The same OTA channel viewed on a Firestick 4K is fine, signal strength is good and high and multiple OTA channels have choppiness. My DVR software has send diagnostic data checked as is Early Features.

Mi box was restarted with the same results. Respond if you need more info. Hopefully the diagnostic data can provide additional info. Tuner info is listed in my profile.

Thanks

Log looks like it is still trying to use the broken hw codec.

Investigating...

New apk downloaded, installed and tested.

Both OTA and Cable channels are now coming through perfectly. All issues seems to have gone away. Will keep viewing/testing and report any issues if there are any.

Thanks for the patch!!!! Mi S is usable again.

I had jittery picture at first and then rebooted the Mi Box and it went away. Have you rebooted the Mi Box since upgrading the HDHR apk?

Comcast mostly use its own flavor of H.264/AVC for HD channels. So that's a different problem than the issue of MPEG2 decoder problem of this thread. Comcast's H.264 are known to cause problems the a lot of decoders.
