Warning! Do not update your Mi Box S to Latest Android 9 release

Post by foxbat121 » Wed Jan 08, 2020 6:11 pm

Just bought a Mi Box S from Walmart a few days ago. Everything worked fine with the Android 8 ROM. Today, Android 9 ROM officially released. So I upgraded it OTA. Now most of the MPEG2 channels in HDHR app are unwatchable (stutter and pixelate every other seconds). I may just have to return this sucker.

This problem seems to be related to the MPEG2 video playback only. AVC channels are ok. Some local broadcasting channels are ok as well (I'm on FIOS). All streaming services work fine. I tried both wi-fi and wired connection.

Can I get you to shoot us a ticket for this on http://www.silicondust.com/support/trouble-ticket/ ? I tested just now with a just-opened MiBox S and updated to Android 9, but MPEG2 channels seem fine. There might be another factor at play to cause the issue.

Im on the same boat. My nephew accidentally upgraded my Mi Box S which made in Android 9. It is exactly what the OP is mentioning. Stuttering/Pixelated on MPEG2 content. I also have Verizon FIOS with HDHR Prime.

I even used the LIVE Channels that came with the MiBOX and its the same thing.

My Nvidia Shield works fine.

Let me know if there is something I can help to troubleshoot.

As I pointed out in another thread, VLC app behaves the exact same. That points to the codec failure of the system. I suspect there is very little SD can do to work around this issue as it depends on that very codec to do the playback for DRM channels.

I agree with foxbat, I have the same issue trying to run live TV using the Emby app. For me, it appears to be the 720p channels that has all these stuttering and unwatchable.

In addition to 720p channels, I also observed the same on Discovery Channel (620) which should be 1080i but not the NBC and CBS broadcasting channels.

Ditto. I have 2 shields and a mi box s talking to a hdhomerun prime w/FIOS. Only mi box having an issue. Upgraded to pie release to get prime video (I could cast with 8.1), netflix/youtube seemed to working fine, but all channels that I tried from hdhomerun are borked with stutter and pixelation. I'm seeing on both 720p and 1080i, abc/cbs/nbc/fox are all seeing the issue. I tried factory reset, but I did not track down AVC channels vs MPEG2 as original person stated. Seemed like a Xaomi problem, not SD, but thought I would add my thumbs down to the "upgrade" if you are using a prime. I e-mailed Xaomi about a downgrade path, all they sent was a form letter saying that they were working on the problem, I didn't get a warm and fuzzy about their response, but might help if more people e-mail them. Mi Box bought from walmart in December for $30, worked pretty well on 8.1, I'm thinking I may do a replacement as I have till March 15th.

I don't think there is anyway to stop the (automatic) upgrade once OTA is released.

Don't know if this is appropriate, but I purchased the Mibox S when it was on sale for $30 USD, could not resist. Anyway, I have to update every device I have as soon as an upgrade appears. So, I immediately installed the first "Pie" beta I could find, terrible mistake, trying to use the HDHomeRun app was horrible, could not watch. So, I put it in a drawer and waited for another update. Then they came out with beta 3, I think it was, so I updated again, same issue, HDHR app was not watchable. Back into the drawer, then they said the final was out, downloaded and installed it, same issues. Strangely, it has the same build number, so that does not make sense. On one of the forums, they said that Xiaomi made a mistake and pushed out the beta 3 as a final................

Back to the drawer.

I did make a video comparing this Mibox S to a Beelink GT1 Mini2, that is much more in price, but does much more....

It does not look like the Beelink is an officially certified Android TV box, just another generic Android box that won't support DRM channel playback though.

Don't know, but I would guess that you are correct. It does support Google Widevine level 1 with HDCP 2.2 protection.

That means absolutely nothing as far as HDHR concerns.
