DVR has recorded, but now will not!

Post by Rau » Sat Dec 28, 2019 4:40 pm

I am having problems!

I got the DVR going with help from the forums in the following thread: viewtopic.php?f=113&t=72917

I have made some recordings and all looked OK. But now, nothing records. I typically use the Discover function to locate a program, click into it, click an entry in the display, a red dot appears (indicating it will record, I suppose). If I go to the "Tasks" function, I'll see the item I've selected to record listed there (no red dots - not sure if there should be?). But nothing records.

I have a share called HDHomeRunRecordings set up on my Synology into which recordings have previously and should appear. But now they are not. It is only if I use the Live function that I see files appear (in the Live TV) folder of that share. FYI I have setup a drive mapping on my windows 10 PC so that R: shows me the HDHomeRunRecordings share.

Looking in the log files, there are what look like errors. From the most recent logfile 20191228 here is an extract:

I have no clue on how to resolve this......

Have you tried rebooting the Synology? For some reason our servers don't show the DVR as having connected to us since the 24th, but since it is making new log files, it is running. Something is preventing it from connecting to the internet and downloading guide data.

Certainly I can do a shutdown and start it up again. I have now done so now. Firing up the DVR Manager reveals one change - in addition to the 2 HDHomerun Connects, the Record Engine now shows. When I click "Recordings" - it shows 0 Recordings even though there are some. [This was also the case prior to this restart.]

Turning to the HDHomeRun App, Discover is showing program info, Tasks is showing what I've specified to be recorded, Live works, but now when I look in the Live TV folder (from my windows 10 machine), there is nothing!! I can pause and resume Live TV, so the video must be going somewhere! And under "Recorded" - it says "YourHomeRun DVR is ready to record". Prior to the restart, it was showing various programs recorded previously.

Update: Now I am seeing recordings happening!

On the DVR Manager, clicking "Recordings" is showing items. I can see additional content via Win10 file explorer. Choosing Live TV causes a file to appear in the Live TV folder.

? It seems to be working again??

Again - the system has stopped recording!

The Homerun DVR Manager shows (on Dashboard) the 2 HDHomeRun Connect devices but I think in the past I've seen the Recording Engine show here also. If I click "Recordings" it shows none, though there are some in the relevant folder.

I really struggle with this system. The logs are too technical to make any sense to me.

How do I solve this? I assume the product is expected to "just work"?

I am re-starting the Synology Server to see what happens.....

After a Synology Restart, I now see (in the DVR Manager Dashboard) both Homerun Connects PLUS the Record Engine. So......why does the Record Engine disappear, and why does a synology restart cause it to re-appear?

The DVR was able to reach our server for its check-in at 8:08am on the 11th. The next check-in at 10:06 it could not reach the server, but was still able to send us the log data in realtime, so it wasn't something simple like your internet being down. After 10:36 it stopped logging entirely until it was restarted at 12:20pm today. Since it could still log but not reach the server, this could indicate a problem with the DNS server the NAS is using. What do you have the DNS server set to? Can you try setting it to something else, like Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) or Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)?

The Synology is a device on my home LAN. The "default gateway" is specified as the IP address of the Cable Modem/Router (192.168.01). That device specifies a primary and alternate DNS 61.9.195.193, 61.9.194.49. The ISP I'm using is Telstra, the largest in the country. The DNS servers in the Modem/Router cannot be changed and hard to believe they are a source of problems.

Further update:
It's about 10:50pm or so local time. Programs were set to record at 7:30pm, 8pm, 8:30pm and 9pm. At this time, I can't see any evidence that they did record though. Looking in the folder where the recordings are placed on the Synology server i can't see any evidence of new files. If I go to the "Recorded" tab on the HDHomeRun app, it says "Your HDHomeRun DVR is reaady to record". On the "Discover" tab, there is a red dot on the item set to record at 8:30pm - it's a movie. But looking at the HDConnect devices, there are no channel lights on to indicate any are in use. On the Synology HDHomeRun DVR Manager, the Dashboard looks to be as it should be - both HDHomeRun Connect devices plus the Record Engine are present. If I click Recordings, it shows "0 Recordings". As mentioned previously, there are older recordings present.

The last logs we got from your DVR were at 17:12 on the 14th. Logs have not resumed since then. I'm going to assume the local logs are still updating and show the sync and download failing. If the DVR can't sync, it won't record, because it doesn't know what to record.

Please try changing the DNS servers directly on the NAS. You're seeing something outside the norm, and troubleshooting that is basically going to be going trying things one by one until it starts working.

OK I will try to set different DNS. I just home the modem/router does not intercept and force use of its preferred DNS!
Looking on the DVR Manager, the last log entry (in file 20200114) is 20200114-01:17:25. I don't know what to do that would force a log entry, so I can't test whether logs are being written (other than wait a while and see if a new log file appears).

I've now gone to the Control Panel on the synology server. In the Network / General area, I've ticked "Manually Configure DNS server" and specified 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1.

Stop the engine and remove latest log ( click on log and hit the big red X on the right on top of the log details)
Restart engine and refresh window

I believe I've just done that now. There is now no 200200114 logfile, but there is now a 200200115 log file.

By the way: I stopped engine with the Square icon and started it with the triangular button (looks like the "play" button on a cassette recorder).

Why does the last log entry say "no timer evens planned" if I have recordings scheduled?

FYI: When I click recordings, it now shows a list of recorded programs.

Timer events are for the next 4 hours you won't get any outside that range. They are also dependent on being retrieved using the DeviceAuth of the tuner so the tuner must also maintain internet connection as it renews/changes every 8 hours. If either have failed to connect there can be issues (though I think it can take up to 24 hours for the tuner to have real issue).

There have been some routers, particularly those issued by isp's that hand out the router's ip as the dns server, that have had issue with connecting to SD.

Well I think that's how it is here. And the router (ISP supplied) has unchangeable DNS server addresses set in it. As per request, I have set the synology to use the cloudflare DNS, and hope the modem/router does not interfere with that and substitute its own DNS preference.

AND - I've set something to record in about 10mins time, and I see that does appear in the log:
20200115-01:51:50 Recording: Mission: eventImpossible S03E23 [20200115-0200] in future

20200115-01:51:50 Recording: next timer event in 0h07m40s

20200115-01:51:55 Status: Resource: nbk=0 dmk=215

Bit strange how the word "event" got stick in the middle of the program name!

Looks like this recording is working.
