High data usage at home on data capped plan

Post by music4jimmy » Sat Dec 28, 2019 4:41 am

Can anyone help explain why my HD HomeRun is often the highest data usage device in my home? This past Sunday for example the HDHR used up 45.1 GB of data. Looking at the log for that day I see a lot of 'streaming' items. I don't understand what that means, is the HDHR going to keep using a lot of data, can I avoid doing that?

Here is the log from that day:

All of those "streaming" entries are streaming the antenna feed to a client on your internal network. None of those messages relate to the HDHR streaming anything from the internet (in the Netflix-sense).

Are you fairly certain it was the HDHR that used all that data? The only thing the tuner downloads from the internet are guide details, and there is no way that guide data accounted for 45GB.

As rpcameron said, that should all be local network traffic and should not have any impact on your data cap, which is only on internet traffic. The guide data that the HDHomeRun downloads is very small, basically the same as loading a web page without images.

I'm using AT&T Smart Home Manager app to get this information. Even though it lists the HDHR as one of the largest data users, I guess it could just be detecting that antenna streaming to my phone/tv as data usage but hopefully AT&T has their own system that is smart enough to know that this information isn't coming from internet. I'll just try to keep an eye on things. Thanks for the replies!
