Apple TV Setup

Post by Moonliner » Sat Sep 07, 2019 6:48 pm

Am setting up HDHOMERUN SCRIBE DUO

Want to watch on TV (not iOS devices) via Apple TV

Only Apps given in your setup are Channels DVR which doesn't locate a Channels DVR, Channels premium which wants $25. (your setup says free) or InstaTV that's only for iOS.

HOW DO I SET UP ON APPLE TV?

Generally you don't as SD does not make a tvOS app... I did recently read that someone was running the Kodi Add-on on an apple tv but last I heard getting kodi on it wasn't "easy"

Thanks, Interesting as HDHomeRun says will work with Apple TV.

So the questions is whether to gamble $25 on the "Channels" app which apparently does the trick. But then will the built in DVR on Scribe work?

How about Roku or Smartcast? I have those too. Don't see a mention of Roku on their setup page but again it is listed in their online stuff.

The Channels DVR works great, the software even has a built-in commercial skip function.

I have no idea about the Scribe but you could ask over at the Channels forum,

Thanks, I have posted there. The Channels DVR shows on AppleTV but is looking for a DVR on a Mac I think, which it doesn't find. We'll see what they say.

Channels DVR will not work with the Scribe built in DVR ... you would have to setup a server to run Channels DVR and use the Scribe tuners but not the storage on it.

OK then so the Scribe will NOT work with an actual television?

Similar to how channels works the DVR backend is done on a separate device like a NAS or computer. In this case the scribe is a first party DVR device. It is only the backend. You need to have another device for the frontend (Win10, Mac, Xbox, FireTV, AndroidTV, iOS or Roku [partial DVR functionality]) there is no frontend for tvOS right now.

I believe InstaTV will work on Apple TV and access the DVR.

I use the Channels app on all of my Apple TVs. Buy it once, and install it on as many Apple TVs that are associated with your Apple account. You do not have to install Channels DVR to watch Live TV on the Channels app. InstaTV is an option to watch recorded content on Apple TV. I don't have recent experience with InstaTV, but my past experience led me to watch live TV via the Channels app as InstaTV live tv experience wasn't great and use InstaTV to watch recorded content (granted, this was a few years back). But I do take your point - it's beyond time that SD rolled out an Apple TV app.
