DVR ON PC, PLAYBACK ON SHIELD

Post by itzabo » Sun Jun 16, 2019 7:11 am

Is it possible to use my PC to record and my shields to playback?
I have a HD Prime with 3 tuners and a cable card.
All devices can easily watch all channels (DRM included)

TIA!!

Yes, with SiliconDust Software you just need the DVR subscription, or there are other 3rd party software. I assume your PC is Windows 10 since you say you can view DRM, which currently only works with SD software on Windows 10 And Android TV. DRM cannot be recorded at this time, but you can view it live on your Nvidia Shield.

Download the Software on your computer, and download the APP on Nvidia Shield. There are further instructions if you need them in the Downloads and Instructions forum at the top of the page you posted this in.

The reason I don't like having my Windows10 computer be my DVR drive is that the computer can never go to sleep. Depending on your computer, this can be a real energy hog. Your Shield with a portable drive would probably be more energy efficient if it is on all the time. That is why I chose an Android box for my storage.

That is where the new HDHomeRun SERVIO is the perfect solution - 2TB and lower energy consumption that running a PC or Android box.

And if you ever need more space you can add a second HDHomeRun SERVIO.

Currently I just run a Win7 VM on KVM and using WMC.
I'm already running other VMs on the server so apart from the few additional CPU cycles that may add a watt or two, no real cost to the powerbill.
I have 2 HDHR-3CC on the network that deliver the streams to the VM.
The main OS drive is iSCSI to the NAS and raid protected.
A 2TB storage drive (D) supplies the recording room and is volatile if drive failure occurs - mostly because I stay pretty current with my recordings.
This allows me to leverage XBox 360s for MCE throughout the house and record pretty much whatever I want and watch it in any room.
It's not perfect, but at least it works (mostly - when the guide is all jacked up or a NWS message doesn't screw up the xbox...).

I don't have to be chained to my TV if I want to watch a show since Spectrum has the DRM bit flipped on everything now (even HD local channels which I thought was off limits).
I invested in the DVR kickstarter 3 or 4 years back and was excited for what was promised to come, a full WMC replacement suite that gave me freedom across platforms, etc...

Still waiting and I am very disappointed in the lack of progress.

I don't understand why it's taking so long to allow for DRM recording/playback, IMHO this should be priority 1 for this product line - until it supports DRM recording/playback I have no use for the product and at best it will be niche for a few small markets that haven't flipped over to full DRM or OTA users only that have other options available.
