HDHomeRun OTA Live for Roku

Post by nateb » Wed Jun 12, 2019 6:26 pm

Hey forum folk, we've got news!

https://www.silicondust.com/introducing ... roku-beta/

We are officially releasing an app for Roku (in beta). See the blogpost for all the details, plus installation instructions.

Feel free to comment here for your experiences with the app.

EDIT: Can't hear sound? From the blog post:
...to hear audio, you need a TV, AV receiver, or soundbar that can decode Dolby Digital or AC3 audio over HDMI. Most modern TVs can do this, though we’ve noticed a few Samsung TVs cannot. All Roku televisions should be able to play audio without any trouble.

Waited years for this. Just added the channel to my five year old Rokus which are still humming along.

Does it at least support DRM playback?

Sorry I just re-read the title.

Excited about this! I've been using a Plex server, but it seems to add some additional latency and uses extra resources on my server, so I'm glad to cut out the middleman.

One note: to get this to work on my Roku Premiere+ 2016 (4630X), I had to change the audio settings on my Roku because the default settings (stereo/PCM) weren't working. The settings that worked for me are as follows:

Audio mode: Auto
HDMI: Dolby Digital

Thank you, SiliconDust! The Roku app will resolve a huge limitation for Roku users.

I installed the beta app on my Roku. The app finds my HDHR and I can see the channel + program listing but it does not play any programming. I just see the channels along the bottom of the screen and the program schedule pops up when I scroll over that channel but the screen stays on the HD HomeRun logo background.

I did confirm that I can play live programming from my HDHR on my computer.

Maybe I am missing something? I tried selecting a live program, scrolling around, used the OK and 'play' button, let the app 'sit' on a program for a couple minutes...no dice. I have an HDHR Dual (model HDHR3-US) running firmware 20170930 and Roku 3 (model 4200X) with software version 9.1.0 build 4111-04. Any advice would be most appreciated.

You need a device that supports HTTP streaming, so the Dual will not work, it has to be a CONNECT or newer. We'll take a look at the device detection logic to make sure it ignores incompatible models, and make sure it's noted in the app information once it's out of beta.

The app is still not showing up, have forced updates, several other channels updated, no luck with the beta
Models 3900RW and 3910RW firmware 9.1.0 , HDHR4.
Thanks for any help you could offer. Looking forward to testing it out.

Did you follow the link in OP to register for the beta channel using a code?

Yes, I have, everything looks good on that side, get the Channel Added screen, just not being pushed to devices.

I installed the app and was going to test it with my Connect, but I find that it's working with my Prime just fine. Obviously, they say this is just for OTA at the moment, so YMMV, but we haven't had any issues with playback that I've noticed. I'm assuming they say OTA only because this lacks any DRM support?

Roku requires information that is in the ATSC stream but may or may not be in a CableCARD stream.

If the Roku app is playing from your PRIME then great!

So I hate to question a 'good thing' but should it really work with a Prime. Should it?
