HDHomeRun App - GJ51

Postby GJ51 » Sat May 11, 2019 9:25 am

I seem to be having the same or similar problem on my desktop. Initial start is a blank screen, then a still shot, and then extreme pixilation, then freeze.

I have another laptop that runs fine.

Additionally, if I run HRHR app through Kodi, everything works fine.

I've ininstalled/re-installed a few times, but nothing seems to help.

Edit: It appears that the problem only applies to HD channels - on FIOS using the SD version of the same channels works fine.

No issue on either under Kodi app.

How is the desktop connected network-wise?

What kind of video card does the desktop have?

What resolution/refresh rate is the screen running at?

If you remove the Microsoft MPEG2 extension, do you see different behavior on the HD channels?

I removed the MPEG 2 extension and then rebooted PC.

SD channels now have occasional pixilation and stuttering. HD channels still pixelating for a bit and then freeze.

I usually watch video on a 24" 1920X1200 monitor connected via HDMI cable or on a 27" display port connected 1440p monitor - usually in a window of about 25% screen size.

Both @ 60Hz

HDHR generates a popup suggesting installing mpeg2 extension... ?

Same setup I ran without problems under Win 7 before upgrading to Win 10 Pro.

Would alternate codec pack such as K-lite perhaps improve?

Still runs perfectly fine under Kodi on all channels except DRM tagged such as Cinemax.

A codec pack would have no effect. The HDHomeRun app will use the Microsoft decoder or its own, nothing else.

You said you upgraded from Windows 7; was that actually an upgrade in place or did you do a clean install? If it was an in-place upgrade, have you completely removed the NVIDIA driver (believe they have an option to clean everything when uninstalling) and installed the current version from the NVIDIA site? Sometimes the drivers don't get cleaned out fully on an in-place upgrade, and that can cause weird things to happen.

Please enable the sending of diagnostic data on the HDHomeRun, run a channel scan, and enable the sending of diagnostic data in the app (see viewtopic.php?f=15&t=69066), then watch something for 10 minutes, even if it freezes. Reply back with the device ID for your HDHomeRun and we will check the logs.

Model: HDHR3-CC
Device ID: 13109A70
Firmware: 20190417

Windows 10 was a clean install.
I just installed the latest Nvidia driver before enabling the diagnostic data.

It seemed to run a littler better, but still getting bad pixilation.

You're getting a ton of network packet loss. You may want to trying replacing the PC's network cable and, if the PC has a wireless interface, make sure you're disconnected from the wireless network, just in case Windows randomly decides to use wifi even when a perfectly good wired connection is available.

Thanks Jason,

Further testing has indicated a problem with my VPN setup.

Thank you for your help.

If you haven't already, Under "Video" settings for your Nvidia graphics card, "Adjust video image settings", make sure that "Use inverse telecine" is not checked. This was causing similar issues on my Desktop with Nvidia graphics card.

dfleenor - Thanks for the suggestion, but no luck.

We've been troubleshooting quite a bit trying to solve this riddle.

EDIT:

We just solved it! We shut down the HDHR services on a PC connected to the network over VPN, re-started and all is well.

Apparently that PC was running services in the background and locking the tuner.

HDHomerunrecord service on that Win 7 box was the culprit.

Go figure

All working now.
