After adding DVR DRM channels no longer play with HDHomerun app

Post by munozj » Sat Apr 27, 2019 3:39 pm

One shouldn't haven anything to do with the other. Earlier this week I was able to watch DRM channels from my cable provider using the HDHomerun App on my iOS device. Yesterday I added a fire stick and the HDHomeRun DVR service. Now I'm getting a protected content error on the player. "Unable to play channel Content protection error"

I rebooted all my HDHomerun receivers and the cable tuning adapter.

That is expected on an Amazon (FireTV) product as they don't support DRM.

If you are still getting it on the iOS device, make sure you are on latest DVR engine as there was an issue when using older versions of the engine with the DVR when using the new UI.

You may need to restart "everything" (usually just the DVR and the app but some platforms seem to cache things even when they are not supposed to).

Getting the same error "Unable to play channel Content protection error" on my iPod and iPadPro running iOS v12.2 while watching LiveTV, even still today.
I haven't been able to get DRM channels to play live on iOS for quite awhile. Normal channels play fine.
My last posts about this seems to have fallen into the forum black hole and I cannot view them on this forum.

Do I have to subscribe to HDHR's DVR service in order to view LiveTV DRM content on my Apple devices running iOS?

Are you using the new UI? There is an issue when using the new ui that requires the dvr to be latest version (but i believe should have no affect with no dvr). There are other issues if a dvr engine is found running but not authorized (subscribed) but 99% of the time it should not get detected if it isn't authorized.

One thing about DRM is a <7ms rtt requirement (and i personally believe with sd's software that max is closer to 5ms) and often anything that needs to change media (such as ethernet to wifi) often results in exceeding that max rtt so i strongly recommend using wired devices for troubleshooting but that most likely isn't possible with iOS devices.

Not using new UI or HDHR DVR, just the basic iOS client Version 20190418 on iPod Touch and iPadPro w/iOS 12.2.

How would I measure my RTT time from the Prime to my WiFi iOS devices? my iOS clients are obviously WiFi using 5Ghz AC connections and cannot do wired ethernet.

I use a beam-forming connection from my access point to my iOS devices and even when they're held a foot away from the WiFi access point getting anywhere from 250(iPod)-868(iPadPro) Mbps (per Channels DVR speedtest from my Channels DVR PC on the same Gbit switch as the HDHR Prime), they still give the same error.

It used to work in the past as I posted previously (that fell off the forum due to age I guess) but at some point due to a Prime f/w update or iOS client update it stopped working.

There is a known issue with iOS 12.2. see the sticky thread right on top.

The iOS 12.2 problem has been solved.

Actually still waiting on Apple to fix the problem they introduced (we have a bug report filed with the core team) but we re-wrote the rendering path to use GPU shaders to do the color space conversion.

DRM not working - quick test first - please uninstall and reinstall the app to force it to reauthorize.

Just uninstalled and reinstalled the app twice, no help.

Please open the HDHomeRun app, press play/pause 13 times to bring up the settings screen, turn on Send diagnostic information, turn off Early access to new features (if it's enabled), force quit the app (double press the button and swipe it away), reopen the app, and try to watch a DRM channel. Reply back and we will check the logs.

Just did on iPod Touch 6th generation, trying to watch Starz on channel 816.
Will try on iPadPro in a few minutes.
Works fine on my iPadPro 9.7" (2016) running iOS 12.2, but not on the iPod Touch.

Is there an easy way to measure the RTT time between the HDHR Prime and the iPod Touch (if that may be the cause)?

The diagnostic information indicates that the system check failed.

Not sure what would cause that other than obvious things like screen mirroring or having an external screen connected to the iPad.

iPadPro works, iPod Touch does not.
I sent diagnostics from the iPod Touch which was not plugged into anything, no screen mirroring, etc and just WiFi enabled.

Do you have encryption enabled on Wifi? (requirement for DTCP-IP)

On the WiFi access point I have WPA2-Personal, AES encryption enabled.
There is no setting I know of on the iPod Touch to disable it and the iPadPro that works connects to the same WiFi access point.
I just told the iPod Touch to forget my 5GHz wifi and then reconnected, same problem.
